CO-CURRICULAR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

Student Services is pleased to offer Co-Curricular Professional Development Workshops on topics that give participants the opportunity to broaden their knowledge in teacher education and assist with employment preparation in the teaching field.

You will be able to register for these workshops online on:

Please read the following sections carefully before registering :

1.  CERTIFICATE FOR CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS

Certificates will be issued upon completion of the workshop/workshop series.

2.  REGISTRATION

► Please note that space is limited. You must enroll and pay to secure your space.

► Enrolment begins on the Student Services website on Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 at 9:00 a.m.

► Be sure to check the date, time and cost of the workshop before selecting.

► Confirm your enrolment when you finish

► Registration is completed after you have paid the total cost for the workshops you select.

Please ensure that you return to Student Services website

to complete your transaction

(Failure to do so will result in you not being registered for the workshop you have chosen.)

► Please also verify your confirmation of registration by checking it on MY SS, payment

confirmation will be sent via e-mail.

3.  FEES & METHOD OF PAYMENT

The total fee must be paid immediately following online registration

with a credit card (Visa and MasterCard) ONLY.

4.  INFORMATION ABOUT WORKSHOPS

Information on workshop location, date, and time will appear on a record that you should print following online enrolment. Please check for accuracy at the time of registration. Keep this record for your reference.

You may also visit http://www.studentservices.oise.utoronto.ca , click Register for Workshops>My SS to check on workshops that you have registered in.

You will need to show your student ID card together with your printed record for admittance to the workshops. Please arrive at the workshop location well before the start time. Students who arrive later than 30 minutes after the workshop has started will be allowed to attend the workshop, but their attendance will not be counted as part of the certificate program.

5.  REFUND/EXCHANGE

You may cancel or change any workshop by visiting http://www.studentservices.oise.utoronto.ca My SS>Enroll> Withdraw, 7 days prior to the workshop date. This policy makes it a fair process for other teacher candidates wishing to register for the workshop.

A $ 5.00 administrative fee will be charged for cancelling a workshop, and for changing from one workshop to another.

This fee is necessary as Student Services incurs a fee that is issued by the Interact Service Vendor each time a transaction occurs.

6.  CANCELLATIONS

In the event that a workshop is postponed, students will be informed using the OISE email system - First-Class. Cancellation notices will be mailed to your first class account.

Susan Seidman, former principal of The Waterfront School in the Toronto District School Board, and Merilyn Fox, winner of the Ontario Association of Mathematics Educators' Outstanding Teacher award, will present a workshop on practical strategies for grading and reporting achievement in Ontario schools. In addition to the workshop materials, participants will receive certificates of participation. OISE/UT's Student Services and the Phi Delta Kappa University of Toronto Chapter are jointly sponsoring this workshop. Founded in 1906, Phi Delta Kappa is an international association of educators dedicated to the promotion of quality education, with particular emphasis on publicly supported education. q  HOW AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS CAN MOTIVATE AND INSPIRE STUDENTS Code: AHGF2

For too long, traditional assessment such as tests and essays have dominated how we assess student learning. Authentic assessment gives a meaningful context to curriculum. In this workshop the benefits of using a differentiate model of assessment as well as how to design engaging authentic tasks for students will be explored. The workshop will build on the Understanding Assessment Policy workshop by putting policy into practice through authentic performance tasks.

This informative and practical workshop will bring clarity to assessment policy in schools by debunking some of the troublesome myths, highlighting the key elements of sound assessment and exploring ways to design curriculum so that assessment drives instruction. Once properly understood, Ontario's assessment framework provides a powerful way to design and deliver curriculum.

q  CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT: SURVIVAL SKILLS FOR YOU AND YOUR STUDENTS-ESPECIALLY THOSE AT RISK. Code: CTGF1/CTGW1

This entertaining and humourous workshop will feature practical methods for interruption free discipline and for setting up a transparent classroom structure. Positive techniques for modelling your classroom expectations will also be shared. This is an extremely inspirational presentation. English Language Learners in Our Classrooms - Part 1 of the workshop covers: Who is the ESL learner, background to practice, backgrounds and needs of immigrants and refugee students, unique factors affecting teaching, assessment and equity, top ten research in language acquisition, ESL students language and skill levels/stages.

Effective Programs for Instruction of English Language Learners - Part 2 of the workshop covers: Programming for language learners, effective primary programs, the classroom teacher's strategy list, ideas for newcomer instruction within your classroom, language learning and content instruction adaptations for success.

Providing a Supportive Language Learning Environment - Part 1 of the workshop covers these topics: Understanding how languages are learned, promoting an inclusive learning environment, teaching and learning styles in the multicultural classroom, promoting social interaction and oral language development in the classroom, and teaching strategies that work.

Supporting Academic Language, Assessment and Evaluation - Part 2 of the workshop covers: Providing a comprehensible language environment in the classroom, making program adaptations, modifications, accommodations, integrating reading instruction across the curriculum, supporting writing across the curriculum, and equitable approaches to assessment and evaluation.

q  DEVELOPING ECOLOGICAL LITERACY THROUGH ART

This workshop will be conducted by Hillary Inwood. This workshop integrates learning about the visual arts with environmental education. Experiment with innovative art activities that use the natural world as inspiration, and learn to develop children’s awareness and appreciation of their environment.

q  LITERACY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM Code: LCGF1

This three-hour workshop is for elementary and secondary teacher Candidates. It will allow teacher candidates to become familiar with different approaches to literacy. Teacher candidates will have the opportunity to explore literacy across the curriculum.

q  READING RECOVERY: ENRICHING STRUGGLING READERS IN THE EARLY YEARS

Instructions from the Early Years Literacy Project will provide participants with materials for assessing young readers who are at the emergent stage of reading, and discuss programs and strategies for successful literacy growth. A highlight of the sessions will be an overview of the Reading Recovery program.

q  MEDIA IN ACTION: RECIPES FOR USING VIDEO/TV CLIPS TO ENHANCE EQUITY IN THE CURRICULUM Code: MEGF1

Lynette will present strategies for choosing, preparing and using video sequences as a powerful teaching/learning resource for equity programming. This workshop is of interest to both elementary and secondary educators.

q  PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES: CREATING SCHOOLS THAT LEARN

Code: PLGF1

Using a case study of a real school, explore ways in which school can become vibrant and dynamic learning communities. Explore the role of data collection and staff/student engagement in determining future directions for your school. Explore the power you have as an individual teacher to energize all staff and all students as each focuses on their contribution as learners.

This workshop will allow teacher candidates to become familiar with different approaches to parent-teacher communication. Teacher candidates will have the opportunity to explore the barriers to parent-teacher communication and discuss ways in which teachers can build positive relationships with parents. Workshop participants will also gain practice in employing different communication approaches under varied circumstances.

q  Safe schools for all: Peacemaking education Conference Code: SAGF1

Please come to a one day-conference, "Safe Schools for All: Peacemaking Education," hosted by OISE/UT Student Services, on Saturday, September 24th (9:00 - 5:00). Designed primarily for pre-service teacher education candidates and other school-based educators (graduate students and the community are also welcome), the conference will provide hands-on learning activities and critical discussions on specific aspects of anti-violence and peacemaking. Participants choose interactive and practical workshops (most 2 hours long) from a wide menu of options.

Each small-group session will address particular grade levels and interests, generate discussion and understanding, and provide strategies to handle conflict constructively (and to teach peacemaking) in educational settings. Between workshops (11:30-1:00) there is a Peacemaking Resource Fair. Educators and community organizations will share information and materials on peacebuilding, equity, and anti-violence initiatives, including teaching resources and internship ideas. Pizza lunch is included, and participants will receive certificates documenting their professional development experience.
