Potential Volunteer Tutor,

Thank you for your interest in the CNM Volunteer Program. The goal of the CNM Volunteer Program is to provide support to CNM students by acting as a one on one mentor in Math, Sciences, Basic Literacy or ESL.

In the Math and Sciences, volunteers can work with a student to help build skills in general Math, Calculus (up to Calculus III), Science, Biology, Physics, Statistics, or Chemistry.

The CNM Volunteer Program also sponsors the Adult Literacy Movement of Albuquerque (ALMA). ALMAAdvocates provide tutorial services tothose struggling with reading and writing, and for those learning English as a Second Language. In addition, some volunteers tutor in GED level Math, Reading and Writing.

The CNM Volunteer Program is committed to student-centered tutoring. Volunteers and learners work as a teamto establishand meet studentgoals and objectives. Volunteer tutors are notexpected to be professional teachers; they are coaches who observe, advise, and offer strategies for learning. Learnersare guided in assessing and monitoring their progress with the help of the volunteer working with them.

Potential volunteer tutors must attend a two hour orientationwhich provides a general overview of the program. In addition there are online trainings for volunteers to watch at home to learn tutoring techniques. There is a form to read and sign related to CNM policies. For ALMA ESL Volunteers we also have a free two-day ESL Training called “English Forward” that is offered every 6 months.

Volunteer tutors are matched with an adult learner to meet at least once a week for two hours at one of CNM’s campus libraries or learning centers. The program arranges the match between the volunteer tutor and the learner.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your time, interest, and for considering volunteering with our program. I look forward to meeting and working with you.
