Clyst St George Parish Council Chairman’s Notes: May 2017

Well, we are well into spring now and we have had our Annual Parish Meeting and our AGM will take place on 10th May before our usual monthly meeting. The start of another year in our PC. Apologies for the error in the date I put in last month’s notes – our Clerk had the correct date of course on all the official agendas. Our Annual Parish meeting went well and all the various reports on our activities during the year are on our website for your information.

I would mention in addition that we have had two retirements recently. One was Cllr Peter Bowden who for many years has been our County Councillor and has been most helpful to our Parish and has also on several occasions accessed funding to help us with various projects. Two Councillors will be elected to replace Cllr Bowden in this month’s Council elections. Many thanks to Cllr Bowden.

The second person to retire is Cllr Roger Horner. Many thanks to Roger for all his dedication to the Parish Council over the years. I asked Cllr Paul Bragg who is our longest serving Cllr to say a few words below and we also include a photograph of the presentation that took place at the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council held on Wednesday 12th April:

‘Following his decision to retire as a Parish Councillor, Roger Horner, who has represented Clyst St George for nearly 30 years on the Council, was presented with a voucher by Cllr Bragg and a vote of thanks from the existing Councillors for all the time spent during his tenure.

‘Roger will continue to be Chairman of the Village Hall Committee where for many years he has been instrumental, along with his family, in organising the events that have taken place associated with the Queen’s Jubilee and Millennium celebrations, and with the continual upgrading of the Hall to the high standard it is today; and was honoured with an invitation to the Queen’s Garden Party in recognition of his service to the community.

‘His knowledge of the locality will be sorely missed and we wish Roger a peaceful retirement.’

This retirement has caused a casual vacancy and all the necessary advertisements are now in place. If you are interested in serving your local community then please get in touch with our Clerk – all details on our website. Thank you.

Clyst St George has a delightful nature garden by the side of the parish church. The aim of the garden is togrow local Devon indigenous plants and trees and to encourage a Devon meadow with local wild flowers. Should you wish to help develop this ‘green’ facility, you can come along on the first Saturday of every month from 9.30 to 11 am.
