Close in on a Dark Green Landrover.

INT. CAR – NIGHT

Janine is driving.

Janine Jonestein

Killer

Marie:

Did you hear about Cassidy

Janine:

To her?

Marie:

Janine:

Maria:

Janine:

Maria:

We see Cass, she’ll be

Filthy rich!

Tyrone:

[puts a cigarette into his mouth and lights it]

Hey, hey, that’s all wrong, it was a bus and it

Flattened her, she’s anything but alive.

[laughs]

Marie:

It was not, she’s alive her friend told me!

Janine:

Could you not talk about it as if it’s some

Kind of joke.

Marie:

OK, so maybe it was just a rumour, but she was

Janine:

Well, there was something in the newspaper

About a car crash on the M55, is that anything

Tyrone:

[his cigarette drops

out of his mouth]

Well, I don’t think he is!

Marie:

[looking through windshield]

Janine:

Janine! Look!

EXT. CAR.

Close up on a dead body lead in a pool of blood, outside a red Mercedes, dead!

INT. CAR.

Janine:

Oh my god!

[she puts her hand to her

mouth]

That’s Marcus’ car!

The car skids to a halt, Janine steps out from the drivers seat door.

EXT. CAR.

Janine paces slowly towards the gruesome corpse. Breathing heavily, she stops at the body.

INT. CAR.

Marie:

Janine, maybe we should go

[she is terrified]

W-we’ll get some help! Janine,

Just get in the car! PLEASE?!

[to Tyrone]

God she’s always like this, she can never

Accept calling the police.

Tyrone:

Cut her some slack, that could be her boyfriend!

Marie:

We should still just let the police deal with it!

God damn it!

Marie gets out her mobile phone.

EXT. CAR.

Janine kneels down beside the body, she turns him/her over. It’s Marcus, her boyfriend!

Janine:

[in a shocked whisper]

Marcus!

Suddenly, the red Mercedes’ headlights flash on and the engine revs up. There’s someone in the car, the car heads towards her.

Marie:

JANINE!

She stands up and runs back to the Landrover, the Mercedes on her tail. She screams and dives into her car.

INT. CAR.

She turns the key, but before she puts her foot on the pedal, the Mercedes crashes head on with the car. Sparks fly everywhere, and the car is thrust backwards by the car ahead.

Tyrone:

Oooh SHIT!!

The car crashes through the barrier, Janine dives out of an open window and the car somersaults down the grass-covered hill.

EXT. CAR.

Janine:

[breathing heavily]

MARIE!! TYRONE!!

[there’s a deadly silence]

MARIE!!

Marie:

[Screams]

Janine! [screams again]

Don’t you come near me

With that don’t you!!

INT. WITH MARIE AND THE MAD DRIVER.

A shadowy person with his/her face covered steps towards Marie, a sharp, black handled, kitchen knife in his/her hand.

Marie:

NO! JANINE!

Knife is plunged into her stomach, she screams.

INT. WITH JANINE.

Janine hears the screams. Marie’s dead body rolls down the hill to Janine’s feet. Janine screams out in terror. Suddenly, the shadowy person appears above Janine, from where Marie fell, he/she raises the blood-drenched dagger. Janine screams once more and heads off into the night, down the dark hill. Janine slips and goes sliding down the hill, she crashes into her crashed car at the bottom with a bump, she lies motionless on the ground. Tyrone is still in the car.

INT. CAR.

Tyrone:

M-Marie?

[groans in pain]

EXT. CAR.

Janine:

Tyrone, Tyrone! Are you ok?!

He attempts to climb out of a door window, which is facing to the sky. He falls.

Janine:

Tyrone. [frightened]. We

Gotta get out of here!!

Tyrone:

Why?

Janine:

He killed her! He killed

Marie!

Tyrone:

Who!?

Janine stumbles to her feet, the person is watching from behind the car, he/she rises. A terrified expression appears on Janine’s face.

Tyrone:

NO! No! Janine, help me,

Janine! Jesus, get me the

Hell out of this car!!

[he rumbles about in the car]

Janine’s POV; Petrol in beginning to flood the ground. Looks up at the person, he/she strikes a match and waves it at Janine. He/she drops it and runs.

Close on flames spreading across the petrol covered floor.

Janine:

No, NO!!

[she makes a run for it]

Janine’s heel sticks into the ground.

Janine:

SHIT! NO!

She tugs at her ankle it finally comes loose. The car explodes, Janine falls over and a piece of metal lands on her, almost stapling her to the ground.

Janine’s POV, her vision blurs and everything turns pitch black.

Act 1/scene 2

INT. WITH JANINE ON HILL – DAY.

Man #1 (Jerome)

Man #2

Janine

Janine wakens, she is still where she was when the car exploded. Her sight isn’t very good, but she can just make out two men up on the road above.

INT. ROAD.

Man #1:

Hey, I think there’s someone

Down there!

Man #2:

I’ll call for the rest of the

Crew!

The 1st man comes down to her aid.

Man #1:

Listen, you’ll be OK.

The crew’ll be here any minute!

Janine:

Where’s Marie? He, he killed

Her! [tears form in her eyes]

Man #1:

It’s OK, my name is Jerome,

Me and my crew are gonna get you to

A doctor, real soon, OK?

Janine:

OK.

Act 1/scene 3

INT. STREETS OF MANCHESTER – DAY.

Eve Jonestein [Janine’s mother]

Eve walked down a street toward the hospital, she spots a person in black climbing the fire escape of the S. O. S centre and go into a door saying ‘no entry’ on it. She thinks nothing of it and carries on to her destination.

Act 1/scene 4

Doctor

INT. HOSPITAL – DAY.

Janine lies motionless on an uncomfortable hospital bed. Her mother, Eve Jonestein, enters.

Eve:

Are you OK, honey?

Janine:

Mum? Is that you?

Eve:

It’s ok, darling, I’m here.

Janine:

Yeah, here to see how

Much compensation I’m

Gonna get!

Eve:

Janine! I am deeply offended!

Where did you hear such talk?

Janine:

MUM! Don’t play dumb, it was

exactly the same with dad!

Eve:

What? How can you say

Such a thing?

Janine:

Don’t think I haven’t

You’re just selfish

And greedy.

Doctor enters the room.

Doctor:

Is everything OK, ladies?

Eve:

Fine! [she storms out through the door]

Doctor:

May I get you anything, Ms. Jonestein?

Janine:

No! I’m fine, thanks!

[she calms herself and lies

her head back down on the pillow]

Act 1/scene 5

INT. S.O.S CENTRE – DAY.

Jerome Midcot [the one from the hill] sits down for his lunch-break.

Jerome Midcot

Dale Bontlen

Wayne Mingern

Killer

Dale and Wayne enter. Jerome is reading newspaper.

Dale:

So, who’s the chick

You found today at

The hill?

Jerome:

Dunno, but she was quite…

Wayne:

Slutty?

Jerome:

Yeah [rises and folds

Up newspaper] so I think

She’s more your type!

Since you’re so desperate.

And oh yeah, found

an article for you in

the paper! [throws

newspaper to him]

Wayne opens up the Newspaper and reads aloud;

Wayne:

‘Dial-a-date; Single?’

Hey! That was uncalled

For, I’m not desperate,

I’ve got women lining up

Around Manchester for me!

Jerome:

[grins]

Sure![sarcastically]

Dale walks off behind Jerome, laughing.

Wayne:

Well, thanks man…

Dumb ass!

Wayne walks into the gents.

INT. GENTS.

He pushes on one of the doors, it is locked, he tries another, locked. All of the doors are locked accept for the one at the end, he walks in, leaving the door open. He is about to undo his zipper when a figure scurries past the doorway behind him, he senses the presence of the person.

Wayne:

Hello? Anyone there?

He walks out of the toilet, as he does one of the doors slam shut.

Wayne:

Hello? [he walks over

To the door]

Jerome? Dale? Is that

You, guys?

There’s a little hole, in which a clothes hanger was once hung on the inside he peeks through. Something plunges through and scratches his eyeball, he screams in pain. The door bursts open, almost flying off its hinges. The person stands there with a hook, obviously used to hook meat up in the butchers. He/she swipes the hook at Wayne, missing his body by centimetres. Wayne runs to the door, but the killer pierces the hook into his back, preventing him from reaching the door. Wayne screams in pain. The hook still in Wayne’s back, he/she swings him down onto the floor.

Wayne:

[struggles]

H-help, Dale!!

The killer raises a block-hammer in his hand.

Wayne:

No…[breaths heavily]

Get away from me, get

The FUCK away from me.

NO!!

He/she swings the hammer and hits him in the head. And again, and again. He/she lifts Wayne off the floor by the hook and drags him through the emergency exit. A trail of blood is left in his/her path.

Act 1/scene 6

Close on Hospital sign. Royal Infirmary Hospital, Manchester.

INT. MANCHESTER ROYAL INFIRMARY HOSPITAL – EVENING/SUNSET.

Janine

Chloe Lund

Patients/doctors/nurses etc.

Receptionist

Janine gets up out of her uncomfortable bed and walks through the door.

INT. HALLWAY.

Stretchers carrying sick or wounded people where sprouting from doors everywhere. Nurses where talking to doctors.

Chloe:

Janine? Janine what

Are you doing out of

Your bed?

Janine spins around, her friend, Chloe Lund, has come to see her.

Janine:

Chloe, I’m so glad your

Here! Its Marie, last

Night, I saw her, I

Saw her get-

Chloe:

Murdered [she puts

Both her hands on

Janine’s shoulders]

I now, I’m sorry, I

Know she was your friend,

C’mon lets get you

Back to your bed!

Tears stream down Janine’s face.

INT. JANINES HOSPITAL ROOM.

When they get back to the room, Chloe flicks on the TV. A reporter appears on screen and begins to speak.

Reporter (on TV):

Last night Three

Teenagers-

Janine:

Teenagers!? I’m

22 on Wednesday!

Reporter:

Were found, two dead,

One badly injured…

Janine:

They never get the proper story!

Turn that off!

Chloe is about to turn the TV off when something else comes up…

Reporter:

News just in;

Another murder has

Been reported!

Police are investigating,

More news just in,

He was found hung from

His neck from the

Fire escape of the

S. O. S centre

In Manchester.

His name, Wayne Mingern.

Chloe & Janine:

[in unison]

Oh my god!

Chloe:

[looks at Janine]

Janine, that’s my ex-boyfriend!

Janine:

Who the hell is doing this, Chloe!

Chloe walks over to Janine and puts her arm around her.

Chloe:

I don’t know, Janine, I don’t know.

Act 1/scene 7

One year later. Janine and Chloe are now at The University Of Manchester.

Janine is walking down the crowded corridor, her books start to slip from her arms, she drops them completely.

Janine:

Oh, SHIT!

She bends down to pick them up, two feet come into her view.

Janine’s POV, follows up to see Jerome’s face.

Jerome:

Need some help?

Janine:

Is that, Jerome?

Jerome:

Yeah, how d’you… are you the

One from the accident?

Janine:

Yeah… Janine Jonestein,

Nice to meet you… again.

[she shakes his hand]

Well, erm, what class

Have you got next?

Jerome:

Literature, you?

Janine:

Same, care to join me?

Jerome:

They walk down the corridor together. They come to the classroom door.

INT. CLASSROOM.

Lots of students are talking to each other.

Janine is about to reply, when a long, brown haired woman enters the classroom. She is quite old, but hardly looks it.

Janine:

Is that the teacher?

Jerome:

Mrs. O:

Quiet, class. Take your

Seats please.

Everyone sits down.

Mrs. O:

Today, we are going to look at

The book, ‘Flowers in the attic’

By Virginia Andrews. I will give you

Each a copy at the end of the

Lesson, I want you to have read at

Least half the book by Wednesday.

But now, I think I’ll get to know

What books you’ve read. Any volunteers?

Janine turns her head and looks around the classroom and realises that no one is going to volunteer, with a sigh she puts up her hand.

Mrs. O:

Yes Ms…

Janine:

Mrs. Opalson right?

Mrs. O:

Yes, dear, what books

Janine:

Lot’ by Catherine Cookson.

Mrs. O:

TIME CUT:

Janine and Jerome walk out of the classroom with their copies of ‘Flowers in the attic.’

Stacey appears behind Janine.

Jerome:

Hi, I’m Jerome Midcot.

[he shakes Stacey’s hand]

Hand for ages, as if

In her own world]

Jerome:

Stacey:

I wonder where Collin’s

Got to. [he turns his head

Looking for Collin]

Janine:

Who’s Collin?

Jerome:

He’s my roommate, I said

I’d walk from class

A person comes running over.

Collin:

The chicks?

Janine & Stacey:

[in unison]

Janine:

Act 1/scene 8

Janine lies down on her bed reading the ‘Flowers in the attic’ book. The phone rings.

She closes the book and goes into the study and answers the phone.

Janine:

Hello?

Chloe:

Listen, I’m sorry

I didn’t meet you

From class today.

Janine:

Oh, I forgot that

You was going to.

I met my roommate

Today, well

she meet me. But

I’d like it if you

Met me tomorrow.

Chloe:

OK, fine. That’s

All I was ringing

To say, so, bye.

Janine:

Yeah, bye.

She puts down the phone and walks out of study. The book is open.

Janine:

Didn’t I close that

Book? [she shrugs her

Shoulders and lies back down to read]

She turns the page and written in capital letters all over the page it says ‘Remember me Janine?’ she stands up and beckons into the closet door. Hard thuds come from the front door.

Janine:

W-who is it?

Jerome:

[from outside the door]

Janine? Open the door it’s me,

Jerome!

She runs to the door and opens it!

Janine:

Jerome! Look! [she points

At the book, it’s gone]

Oh my god! We gotta get

Out of here!

Jerome:

What is it Janine?

Janine:

The book! [she walks

Over to the bed, Jerome follows]

Jerome stands in front of the closet door, the door swings open, knocking Jerome onto the floor.

Janine:

Jerome!

In the doorway stands the shadowy figure.

He/she lunges at Janine with an axe. Jerome gets up.

Jerome:

NO! [he punches the person

In the face]

The figure falls slightly back, he/she gets steadied and hits Jerome in the head with the flat part of the axe. Jerome falls unconscious to the floor.

Janine:

NO!

The person looks up at Janine. She runs into the bathroom.

INT. BATHROOM.

She locks the door behind her. The door begins to splinter and an axe is made visible through the doors holes. Janine rummages through the cupboard under the sink for a weapon. She finds a screwdriver. The door gives way and the person comes in, he/she raises the axe, Janine stabs the screwdriver through his/her arm, the axe falls to the floor with a thud. The person growls in pain and anger.

INT. BEDROOM.

Janine runs past him and out of the bathroom, she gets to the front door and tugs at the handle, it’s locked.

Janine:

No, come on you piece of shit!

Come ON!

She steps away from the door,

Janine’s POV; looks down at Jerome’s unconscious body. Then up, the killer is gone from the doorway.

Janine walks slowly to the bathroom, she glances inside, there’s no-one there. She turns back around. A window in the bedroom is open and blowing the curtain around. She walks over and closes the window.
