The above individual has expressed great interest in enrolling into Northern Michigan University’s Clinical Laboratory Science online bachelor’s degree program. This program allows an employee to further their education and obtain a national certification while completing all course work online and maintaining employment. Enrollment eligibility is based on Clinical Laboratory Science Advanced Placement criteria.

The didactic component for this program will be delivered using an online teaching format. Access to Northern Michigan University’s learning system, EduCat, is 24/7. The online coursework stands by the same rigorous standards as the on-campus curriculum. Coursework is completed during semester units. The 2-year clinical experience requirement must be met by the end of program completion. Completion of performance objective must be completed at student’s site of employment or other approved clinical institution. Employer understands that it is not the university’s responsibility to obtain affiliations if one or more concentration areas are not a provided service at your institution.

The guidance of a mentor is required. The mentor WILL NOT act as a full time instructor instead will be available to answer questions, evaluate core lab competencies, and provide guidance as needed. Numerous mentors may be utilized depending on the size and needs of your institution. Depending on the skills and work experience of the applicant the time involved will vary throughout the program. Ideally, all competencies should be completed as normal function of employment. If employer cannot provide completion of competencies, the institution must be willing to establish an affiliation agreement to provide a formal structured clinical practicum for one or more of the areas (hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, or UA/serology) if not able to provide the work experience requirement.

The student should reach out to the clinical site to discuss scheduling times so the student can complete all tasks and competencies required by the program. The student will provide all clinical competencies that must be completed to succeed in program. Prior to being accepted into Northern Michigan University’s MLT to MLS online program the student must acquire an employer commitment, so employer understands their obligations and responsibilities. In addition, the applicant must also provide 3 references and complete the student agreement form.
