Climate Challenge Fund

The Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) is funded by the Scottish Government and administered by Keep Scotland Beautiful. Development Grants of up to £1,500 are available to any community-led-organisation, including current CCF Grant Recipients within Scotland. The development grant should be used to develop an application for a climate action project either for the CCF or another Funder.
The following activities are eligible for a Development Grant:
  • A consultation event;
  • Planning or developing a project using the ‘Shifting Normal’ methodology;
  • Training, including on the ‘Shifting Normal’ methodology that should be used to plan and develop CCF projects and;
  • Application writing support, this could include reviewing your existing CCF project using the ‘Shifting Normal’ methodology. This will assist you to identify how a future project could build on the successes of the
  • The costs associated with visiting, or working with, a currently funded CCF project;
  • Expenses relating to organising a Climate Conversation event.
Keep Scotland Beautiful is available to support to both applicants and grant recipients as they develop their applications and implement their projects within three months of accepting the award. / For office use only

An important element of the Climate Challenge Fund is the creation of a network of communities across Scotland that are taking action on Climate Change. Guidance Notes

The aim of the development grant is to encourage and support groups to develop and run a climate action project.

Who can apply –All types of community groups are eligible to apply as long as they are Scottish based, led by their community, operate on a not for profit basis, or a trading company wholly owned by a not for profit organisation, and are legally constituted (or become so prior to receiving CCF funding).

What can the grant be used for - The development grant can be used to fund:

  • A consultation event;
  • Planning or developing a project using the ‘Shifting Normal’ methodology;
  • The costs associated with visiting,or working with, a currently funded CCF project;
  • The costs associated with receiving support from an organisation from the CCF’s Mentoring Framework;
  • Training, including on the ‘Shifting Normal’methodology that should be used to plan and develop climate action projects;
  • Application writing support, this could include reviewing your existing CCF project using the ‘Shifting Normal’ methodology. This will assist you to identify how a future project could build on the successes of the previous project;
  • Expenses relating to organising a Climate Conversation event.

The development grant should not be used for the purchase of equipment or infrastructure improvements (e.g. computers, the installation of bike racks etc.) as this type of expenditure will form part of the application to the CCF or another funder.We hope that each development grant will lead to a strong, fundable project which is supporting your community to take local action on climate chang.

Using ‘Shifting Normal’

Shifting Normal is designed to help community-led organisations tackling climate change maximise their success by taking account of how change happens when planning, carrying out and reviewing their activities. Shifting Normal is informed by the Individual Social and Material (ISM) approach to behaviour change and draws on the experience of community-led organisations to help understand better how change happens, and to use this knowledge to work towards positive change.

Peer-to-Peer Learning / Mentoring Support

Working with other organisations that are already acting on climate change can help you to develop your project idea and to learn from the experience of others. Please use this section of the form to detail which organisation(s) you intend to work with or visit and what aspects of their work you wish to gain an insight into.

An organisation wishing to access Mentoring support will be able to view a profile of each Mentor Organisation online. They will then complete a short expression of interest identifying which mentor they would like to receive support from and detailing what they would like to achieve. After initial contact with the Mentor the applicant will submit either:

•An application for a Development Grant some of which can be used to pay for mentoring time (e.g. project visits, etc.)

•A proposal detailing intended outcomes/outputs of working with a mentor, including costs, to be claimed from their CCF Award.

Name of Project – please give your project a name, which will help us with our filing and promotion. It also might be useful for you to have a snappy title when consulting with people or telling other groups what you are doing.

Project Start Date –We will consider development grant applicationsmonthly and inform applicants of the outcome. There may be other dates which will influence when you would like to run your activities.

Project End Date– the grant will need to be spent and the project completed within 3 months of the start date.

Grant Required – Please tell us how much grant funding your project needs up to a maximum of £1,500.

Bank Details - Please also provide your bank details. You must then provide evidence of your expenditure so we can process your grant claim and reimburse your organisation for the expenditure incurred. Please provide a copy of your organisation’s bank statement or other bank correspondence so we can confirm the details you have provided.

Contact Detail Sharing and Data Protection Act – A great deal of the learning around the Climate Challenge Fund has taken place between groups, which we encourage and support wherever possible. By allowing us to share your contact details, you will become part of this wider learning network. However, as the Data Protection Act also applies, we will make every effort to ensure that vulnerable groups are protected.

What happens next

Your application will be considered by the CCF Team at KSB. We will consider the applications monthly and the2017/18 deadlines are outlined below. Due to high levels of demand the final deadline for Development Grants will be 15 September 2017.

If your application is approved, you will be sent grant acceptance papers within 10 working days. The development grant is formally accepted by completing and returning the grant acceptance form. Once you have accepted the award in writing, we will send you a CCF Welcome Pack which provides you with useful information to assist you implement your project. You will also be allocated a Development Officer (DO) who will be your key contact and who will process claims that your organisation will submit to for project expenditure.

The development grant must be spent within three months of your organisation’s acceptance of the awardand your project completed by 31 March 2018. A final report detail the activities support by the award and the impact of these activities must be submitted within one month of the completion of the project. Your Welcome Pack will contain the information we would like you to submit to us at the end of the funding period.
