Key meeting debated public health’s role in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)
Heart of Mersey (HoM) will be represented at a top level meeting in the European Parliament on June 16 to debate the vital role of public health in the CAP. The charity has long argued that food and agricultural policy should be part of the solution in addressing diet related diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes - all barriers to sustainable economic growth. /
A better start in life for even more nursery children
HM Partnerships has secured additional funding to enable the Food and Nutrition in Early Years course to be offered to more nurseries across the city. Topics on the intensive course include young children's nutritional requirements, portion sizes and menu planning This latest achievement follows a series of interventions by HM Partnerships and HoM. A full overview of the findings and nutritional analysis of the participating nurseries has recently been published in the journal Public Health Nutrition, which can be accessed on our website click here
Lobbying for practical cookery in schools
HoM is calling for practical cookery in school to stay so that thousands of children can continue to learn a valuable lesson in healthy eating. The Government’s intention to slim down the National Curriculum has raised fears that these essential life skills may be lost in the process. The charity has outlined its concerns in a response to the Department of Education Review.
The National Curriculum currently provides at least 24 hours of practical cookery lessons for all pupils at Key Stage 3. HoM believes that supporting children with basic cooking skills gives them a head start in taking responsibility for their own diet and the health of their families in the future.

Stepping up calls for better food labelling
HoM, in collaboration with the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Children’s Food Campaign, Diabetes UK and National Heart Forum, continues to lobby MEPs about the need for accurate and consistent nutritional labelling to make it much easier for consumers to buy food that is healthy.
New research demonstrates the vast benefits of national CVD policy
A national programme reducing population cardiovascular risk by just one percent would prevent approximately 25,000 cardiovascular disease cases and generate public sector savings of approximately £30 million a year, according to new research.
HoM’s Director of Research, Professor Simon Capewell, outlines the immense gains to be made in a jointly-written research article soon to be published in the British Medical Journal.
CVD prevention policies
HoM’s Researchteam has been refining the direction and content of the EuroHeart Health 2, a €2million project set up to address CVD prevention. The aim is to identify the most effective CVD prevention policies in Europe.
The process involves identifying the policies that best promote healthier diets; locating relevant national policy documents and interviewing key people to determine their views on the most powerful policy options for CVD prevention. The findings will be shared with partners and stakeholders and disseminated on relevant websites. Our results will help to support an evidence-based strategic approach to CVD prevention.
The Research Programme is carried out in partnership with University of Liverpool.
