Tips for Creating
●Have students pin the tab for Tinkercad - because if one student exits the website-Tinkercad it will exit all students!! -since they are in the same account
●Creation dimension limits:
Max. size = 105mm x 105mm (or 4 X 4 inches); Max. Height = around 105mm?
●Click on the Geometric Tab or the black cube icon on the right hand side of the screen.
●Click on the shape you would like to use.
●Move the mouse to grid and click
●To remove an object, click on the object and press delete on the keyboard.
●You may need to move the workplane
○To see different angles: Right click and hold and then move the mouse
○To move the entire grid: Hold shift while holding right click to move the grid
○To zoom in or out: use the scroll button on the mouse
●Need exact dimensions
○Click on the Helpers Tab or the grid icon on the right hand side of the screen.
○Click on the ruler, move the mouse back to the grid, and place near your object.
○Then click on your object or shape and the shape dimensions will appear
●When you click on object the inspector window will appear in the upper right hand corner, next to your toolbars.
○You can choose a colored block or a hole
○If you select a hole and you place it inside a solid object and group the items together you will create a new object shape
●To group items
○Click and highlight around all objects or use shift to select multiple objects
○Click the Group icon at top above the Inspector box.
○Grouping allows you to make new shapes in your design.
○Grouping the entire project is also required before printing.
● To aligning objects
○Click and highlight around all objects or use shift to select multiple objects
○Click Adjust icon at top above the Inspector box and then click Align.
○You will see alignment dots
○Click on dot you want it aligned the objects to
○When finished, click out of the area to exit the alignment tool
●When stacking/joining objects:
-use workplanes - makes it easier to align objects (upper right)
-make sure objects touch by zooming in from different angles and sinking one object into the
other to ensure they are touching
●Mirror - highlight what you want to mirror/duplicate on another side -> click adjust -> mirror
●Measure - you can get the measurements of an object at any time by dragging the ruler over
Saving with Tinkercad
●When your project is finished highlight the whole project and group
●Tinkercad automatically saves your work
○However, it is always best to click on the Design tab and click save before closing
●Save your design to the computer by clicking on the Design tab
○Select download for 3D printing
○Select .STL
●File will show at the bottom left corner of the screen as a download.
○Click on the delta arrow file and select show in folder or look in downloads
○Move file to your designated folder. For example: ‘3D projects’
●To exit your project click on the Design tab then click on Close
Using/importing others projects/things:
●Search for object using the search box at the top of the screen.
●Cite your sources:
○You want to use the website format, it should look like:
■Name of object. (Date Published). Retrieved Date Found, from website address
■3D design cowboy hat. (2014, October 1). Retrieved March 24, 2015, from
●To copy image, left click on the object
○Delta arrow next to ‘copy and tinker’
○Click ‘ Copy to Clipboard’
●Open the project you want to work in
○Click on the Edit tab
○Click Paste
Sharing your objects with others
●Settings -Make it public
●Share the title of your object with someone
●They now can search it & and copy to clipboard
●Then they create a new design-> edit -> paste
●Now they have your object!
