Lesson Number 2 of 6 Class Size: Duration: 45 minutes

Facility: gym

Equipment: Music, cones, ribbons, music, word bank

Task 1 (12 min): Freeze tag.

When a student gets tagged they must draw a shape in space with a body part (ex. Draw a square with your knee). Every time a student gets tagged they must draw the shape with a different body part (ex. Shoulder, nose, toes).

·  Introduce general space

·  Talk about safety and looking out for others in general space

·  First have them draw squares, then circles, and finally triangles, changing the taggers in between each round.

·  Discuss flow of movement. When you draw a square does the movement feel sharp or smooth? Bound or free? Etc.

Sport connection:

Arm circles used to throw in baseball and pitch in softball.

Task 2 (4 min): Shoulders, hips, knees and ankles Students standing in a circle

Same song as in lesson one to the tune of head, shoulders, knees and toes.

·  Point your nose, hips, shoulders and eyeballs in a new direction (facing) and do the dance again.

·  Keep changing Facing to introduce ¼, ½, and full turns

Task 3(8 min): Non-locomotor dance skills Students in self space scattered around gym

Teach each skill and then repeat 4 times. After teaching all of them, put them together in a sequence and perform them to music.

·  Plié (means to fold; joints in this case): Movement cues: Legs make diamond, heels down on ground, head high Sport connection: Squats

·  Relevé( means to rise): Rise up and down. Movement cues: legs straight, heels off of ground, head high. Sport connection: Calf raises

·  Retire (means to retreat, withdraw) or Passé(means to pass through): Passé Right, return to two feet, passé left, return and repeat. Movement cues: toe touches under knee cap, leg makes triangle, head high.

·  Battment (means to beat): Kick right leg in front, return to two feet, then side, return, back, return, then side and repeat with left leg. Movement cues: legs straight, move balance to one leg then back to two, head high.

·  Cloches (means like a bell): Swing leg front return to two feet for only a split second and swing back and repeat like ringing of a bell. Movement cues: legs straight, heels together when down, head high.

·  Port de bra (means carriage of the arms): Move arms without changing posture. Movement cues: feet turned out in 1st position, arms slightly curved, hands open.

o  1st position = catch the ball (big beach ball!)

o  2nd position = drop the ball

o  high 5th = put the ball up over your head

o  low 5th = put the ball by your belly button

o  repeat 1st and 2nd and 1st and 2nd and high 5th, low 5th, faster high, then low, then high then low.

Extension: to the beat of the music (any song)

·  Plié stretch relevé and down, Plié stretch relevé and down, retiré right count 2,3 and down, retiré left count 2,3 and down, right, left, battment right- front, side, back, side, battment left- front, side, back, side then closhes 7 on the right, close count 8 and 7 on the left, close count 8.

Task 4 (8 min): Pathways Students standing on one end of court

Moving the whole body along different pathways across the floor with a run.

·  Weave through the cones with rounded turns = curvy path.

·  Weave through cones with sharp turns = zig zag pathway.

·  Discuss which one feels more bound or more free

·  Run on a straight pathway without hitting the cones (they may decide to run past them or jump over them).

Math integration:

Students in line count beat of music 1 - 8. After 5678, student may follow the person in front of them.

Task 5 (5 min): Levels and directions with ribbons Students in self space scattered around gym

Dance to the music drawing pathways and shapes in the air/space around you.

·  Straight pathway forward and back, to the right and left, up and down, and jump.

·  Curvy pathway up to down and left to right, then same with zig zag and jump.

·  Draw shapes with your ribbon: square, circle, and triangle.

·  Circle around your body (spin)

·  Half turn to change your facing and forward bend to wave the ribbon through the window (between your legs)

·  Discuss levels. When was your ribbon at the highest level?

Task 6 (5 min): Place new vocabulary words in the bank Students sitting around word bank

Turn, Plié, Relevé, Passé, Battment, Closhes, Port de bra, Levels, Pathways, Facings, Directions, and Jump.
