How Big Is God?

By Carol Dyck

So how big do you think God is? Is He bigger than me? Is he bigger than this building? Is he bigger than the Heinz chimney? Is God big enough to make people and animals and trees and lakes? Is He big enough to make the sun and moon and stars…..the universe?

Whenever I want to think about how big God is, the first place I look is my Bible, right on the first page, I don’t even need a bookmark. When I read that first page then I begin to understand just how big and how awesome is God. And then I start to think about God making light, because light is so amazing.

Many years ago, Mr Dyck and I went spelunking on our vacation in the Catskill Mountains. Do you know what spelunking is? We went exploring in caves. Now we had to go by elevator way down into the earth to see caves created by an underground river. Down, down, down we went. I was a little nervous. Then our guide stopped the elevator. He asked us if we would like to see what real total darkness looked like. He explained that when we are at the top of the ground, light always manages to get in from somewhere so it is never truly dark. But light cannot get through the dirt so when he turned out the lights it would be really totally dark. Of course, everyone said ‘Yes, turn off the lights!” I jumped. It was so dark. I reached for Mr. Dyck’s hand at least I hope it was his hand for I could not see him. I could not see. I put my hand right in front of my face and I could not even see my hand. I was very glad when the lights were turned back on. And I was very thankful for the light.

Our light travels 93 million miles from the sun. It travels 300,000 km. per second. Nothing travels faster than that! It takes 8 minutes to get here. Just enough time to keep us from burning to a crisp, although it is still pretty hot in summer and you better use your sunscreen. The sunrays have many different sizes, which act differently when it arrives here. Sometimes we see light and colour. Sometimes we feel the heat.

So when you go to the beach this summer, look at the sparkles on the deep blue water. Look overhead and see the seagulls fly. Dig your feet into the hot sand Ouch! Run to the water to cool off. But also remember to say Thanks to God, our very big amazing God who created light.

Prayer: Thank you God for your creation that we are able to enjoy every day.
