Over the winter I have purchased a neglected Edel. The keel is in rough shape. It has deep "exploded" rust pockets and of course the usual crack. I know I need to grind it down, fill the craters with epoxy, prime and paint. Could anyone who has gone through this please give me advise or tips regarding method and products best suited for the job. Should the keel joint be completely repacked?
Ready to get going on it. Come ooonn warm sunshine!

I do have an Edel 540 built in 1982. I am the second owner. The first owner had only sailed the boat for twelve days in 1983, so it sat idle and covered untill the year 2000, when I bought. I am being transfered with work, and am forced to sell the boat. I am looking for only $3,500. It does not have a trailer, but one could be customized for less then $1,500. The engine is a never used Force 5 that I purchased two weeks ago. David B. Hadley (717)293-7809.

I sail a 540 called Tiny on Lake Ontario. I don't believe there is a safety concern in terms of healing the boat. I have had the boat out in some ugly weather (30-40kts, 4-5+ foot waves)but I have never taken water into the cockpit. Long before I get to that point I shorten sail. I had a storm jib made by North Sails and can reach hull speed with it in 30-40kts with the boat under perfect control and able to point decently as well. I also rarely use my roller furling genoa anymore, although when I cruise, I take it, the storm jib and a working jib to be ready for anything. Tiny has never come close to getting knocked flat. She seems to stall and sort of skitter to leeward a bit when momentarily overpowered. Good sailing!

Like all Micro's, the boat sould be considered as safe if she meets the requirements of the category, for a cruiser - provided the total weight is not in excess of 560 - 600 kgs - that tha boat heeled at 90° should be able to lift 15 kgs at the top of the mast.
On a lake, you will never heel further without an external help (crew falling in the mainsail...)
Anyway, this position is not the best to sail fast.
A good angle for sailing is 20 to 25°. In this position, the boat should be light on the helm.
Further, 30° or more, she becomes hard to steer, losses speed as the rudder acts as a brake. In a sudden gust, don't fight too hard, you could break the rudder. Just ease the mainsail sheet, let the boat luff for some degrees, the when the gust is over, take control again. Avoid leaving the sheet on the cleat, be ready to let the sail fly !
And reduce the main if there is impossible to go on at less than 25° of heel !

When I encountered problems with the bow attachment last summer, I suddenly realized that if something happened to the forestay or backstay, I might be confronted with a demasting and a mast coming at me like a missile. When I inspected the base of the mast, there appears to be some possible attachments, etc. Would anyone know if the mast is to be attached to base (grooves, etc.) or should it be like mine, just held up by the stays and shrouds. I would appreciate any information or comments on this subject.

Gerald,
The mast base allows for a pin to be inserted that acts as a hinge in the mast raising process and keeps the mast from jumping out of the base in the rare instance that the deck flexed or the rigging was loose enough to allow it to move upward. I do not think it would keep the mast upright should your forstay or backstay give way.

Hello all Edel Owners overseas !
It's a long time Decagone won the Micro Cup in St Malo, but Edel productions can still be seen racing in Europe.
There is a major error in the documents provided on the site : Decagone was an Edel 2 one-off, with longer mast, lighter construction, daggerboard. The Edel V / 545 was wider, more comfortable, and slightly slower.
The International Micro Class has a web site (another URL, easier to remember is
You will find there the latest evolutions of the class rules (longer battens allowed in the mainsail). If you want to be kept informed of all news in the class, please ask to .
Since 1998, Canadians use to cross the Atlantic (by plane !). They just take a white spinnaker with maple leaf in their luggage.
Next year, the World Championship will be organised at MAUBUISSON, near Bordeaux, and we expect 30 prototypes and 20 production boats, of whiche some will be cruisers. There could be some Edel 545 available for overseas crews, you could come with your own sails.

I offer Nanaimo as a starting point with the Dinghy dock pub /restaurant only floating one of its kind in Canada. Across the way is Newcastle island a Provincial Park and Pacific Yachting ranked it # 3. It offers camping facilities picnic areas and playground and has a fabulous views of the ocean and Nanaimo. Of course the sailing is pretty good too and that would be the focus. Anyway let me know your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions . We could also use my marina for temp moorage or Newcastle island. Lots of possibilities. What do you say sailors ?

I was having trouble with the dropping of sails on our 820. I tried new slides on the main and thought perhaps the halyards were tangled inside the mast. At lift out this year we took the top off the mast and discovered that the sheaves were worn out. They had flat sides and were not turning. Also one was installed incorrectly.
I called E.B. Spars in Hudson, Quebec at 450-455-7921. They provided the original equipment for the Edels in the production process. I happened to be in Quebec and dropped by. Evert Bastet welcomed me and in ten minutes he had me on my way with a new set of sheaves and a new gooseneck split ball connector. I was amazed and very pleased that these parts are so readily available.
Thanks to E. B. Spars!

cold anyone tell me any tricks to use when raising or lowering the mast on a 540. It is too awkward fro my wife and I to do, and in fact another friend and I dropped it off the deck and bent one of the spreaders. They say they are trailerable but outside of trying to muscle the mast up ( this is difficult and not always ractical ) is there an easier and lwss hard on one's back ? Thanks for your help. Incidentently I have gone to a 4 hp yamaha 4 stroke from a 2 hp honda 4 stroke and WHAT a difference it makes. I would reccomend this comb to others. Also have Endura painted the hull off white with burgundy cove and water stripes and have people think it is a new boat. Cheers and can't wait for spring.

Hi Don,
There are a few hints to make that precarious job a little easier and indeed a lot safer. When I had a trailerable boat we rigged a pole to the front of the mast about five feet high and five feet long at right angles and ran a halyard from the top of the mast fastened to the end of this pole. Lay the mast down on the deck with the foot in position and the top toward the aft of the boat. Fasten the shrouds and backstay and then use the pole to lever the mast up. With one person on the halyard the other can fasten the forestay.
This description may not be all that clear so, if you would like to discuss it, e-mail me and I'll give my phone number.
In the meantime perhaps other site visitors will be able to elaborate on this method.

There's a lot of talk about iron keels on 540's and 820's.
This has renewed my curiosity in the 665 keel, which I have always believed to be lead enscapulated in fibreglass. (Probing with a magnet reveals no presence of iron and I have never seen a hull/keel crack on a 665.) I assume the lead is cast into the required shape, or is it loose ingots? How is it secured, mechanically or just by the fibreglass? Does anyone know? I have drilled within 2 or 3 inches of the keel's trailing edge (to drain any water) and found this area void of any metal.
My interest stems from the fact that my 665 is the one which is bow heavy (submerged waterline at bow) and I wonder if perhaps my ballast shifted forward. Strange that the other models would use an iron keel!
