Position Summary

Under the supervision of the JC/GC Animal Shelter Director, this is a non-exempt position assisting in the leadership of the Shelter for effective and efficient management and operation of the Junction City/Geary County Animal Shelter. The Shelter is a joint County/City operation which receives much of their additional funding and support from the local Friends of the Animals Group. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

Essential Functions

  • Assists the Director in all areas of management of the Animal Shelter including:
  • Operation and maintenance of the Animal Shelter conforming to City, State and Federal regulations and statutes.
  • Adoption or disposal of stray or vicious animals.
  • Hiring, training and supervision of staff.
  • Financial Accounting and Budgeting.
  • Conducts research of policies, procedures and regulations as requested by Director.
  • Performs positive public relations including speaking engagements or public appearances as requested by Director. Prepares budgets for submission to Geary County and Junction City.

Marginal Functions

  • Feed and water all animals housed in the facility.
  • Perform intake functions following specified checklist when animals are brought to shelter. Includes such functions as:
  • Complete paperwork regarding animal history and appearance
  • Administer vaccinations as instructed
  • Caging animal in appropriate area
  • Taking fecal sample for testing
  • Monitor health of animals reporting any suspicion of illnesses or disease.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of facility including:
  • Scooping fecal matter inside and outside building
  • Scrub and disinfect inside and outside of cages and fencing
  • Spray outside housing of shelter with disinfectant
  • Sweep and mop walking areas
  • Scrub and disinfect all feeding/watering dishes and litter boxes
  • Maintain clean bedding in clean cages
  • Dust objects and washing walls, bathroom, lobby and office area
  • Trash removal
  • Answers telephone and greets and assists public
  • Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Other Applicant Qualifications

  • Willingness to reside within 30 miles of worksite within 90 days of employment.
  • The facility is open seven days a week, therefore some weekend and holiday work is expected.

Position Requirements

Behavior Standard:Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional and friendly manner with customers, citizens, co-workers and management.

Experience: This is a first-line manager/lead worker position. A minimum of two years of hands-on experience working in a shelter, rescue or other closely related facility is essential. Employee must have the ability to deal with animals of all breeds and temperaments, have no fear of animals and no extreme allergies. Experience in supervision or as a lead worker strongly preferred.

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Must maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Skills: Familiarity with animals and able to recognize possibility of illnesses. Ability to work with animals of all breeds and temperaments. Exceptional customer service skills and ability to work with the general public. Working knowledge in care and treatment of animals.

Problem Solving: Some problem solving exists in this position. Problems include making appropriate decisions in absence of Director regarding all aspects of the shelter operation that should arise.

Decision-Making: Some decision-making exists in this position as this position serves in the role of second in charge of the Animal Shelter operation and is responsible when the Director is absent.

Accountability: Employee is directly responsible for administering the preparation of the department budget and subsequent expenditures as well as for all fees collected through the Animal Shelter. Employee does have budgetary control of the department and does participate in the annual budget process.

Supervision: Supervision is provided by the Animal Shelter Director. Employee has supervisory responsibility over employees and volunteers at the Shelter.

Personal Relations: Continual contact with the general public. Employee must consistently demonstrate a professional and courteous mannerism. Must have knowledge, skills and abilities in dealing with irate and threatening behavior.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and must be able to talk or hear for communication. Lifting is required to move animals. Occasionally the lifting may exceed 40 pounds. Pushing, pulling, kneeling and reaching are required. The employee is continually required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment: The employee will be subject to an environment with extremely loud noises and unpleasant odors on a regular basis. Extreme weather conditions can be encountered.
