Spelling-

If you are new to MGES, we will be using a program called Words Their Way. Students will work on the needed level and sort a list of words to help them be more aware of the patterns and features. Student have been place in their groups and should have an extra copy of the words, the sorting mat and a practice paper to bring home. Full credit is only given when the words are spelled correctly and in the correct feature column. Our first test will be Friday. The class received a stapled set to bring home in their folder, and a whole punched set to cut out and keep in their literacy binder. Word lists (Sorts) are always available on the MGES Website under Parents Tab. Click the link for Words Their Way Information, and choose Words Their Way Parent Sorting Guides.

Reading-

Novel: Trouble River by Betsy Byars

-Assign Book Talks (Due September 9, 2016)

-Students will read pp. 1-21

-Target Skill: Story Elements

Language- Units of Study Writing

-Giving Characters Struggles and Motivations

-Plotting with a Story Arc

-Show, Don’t Tell

With the 45 minutes of Units of Study, language skills are to be somehow embedded into actual writing. I expect that there will be very few scores in Language.

Social Studies- Chapter 1: Indiana’s Geography pp. 2-23

-Review Lesson 1: Land and Water

-Review Lesson 2: Regions and Resources

-Review Lesson 3: Indiana Connection

-Vocabulary WS

-Closed Book Test will be Tuesday, August 30th. The study guide is basically a question by question review of the test. Many students struggle with the vocabulary that highlighted in the text.

Science-

-What are the motions of the oceans? Old Red Harcourt book pp. D38-D45

-What are the layers of the Earth? Old Red Harcourt book pp. C4-C11

-What causes earthquakes? Old Red Harcourt book pp. C12-C17

I suggest keeping the graded papers that come home with Social Studies and Science chapters. They are a good resource to use with a study guide the students will have at the end of the unit. Practicing the vocabulary from the beginning of the unit is a great use of study time.

Thank you! Ron
