Class V – Internet applications – Browsing, Search and Communication

Kaumudi an illustration here of Tejas, Jyoti going around the world

Tejas: Yesterday we saw the movie “Around the world in 80 days”. The movie is a comedy. In those days they had to go by ship from one country to another.

Jyoti: Now we can fly on a plane and reach another country in lesser time.

Tejas: Planning a trip is also easier as we can get a lot of information on the internet.

Jyoti: Yes. And we can also buy train and plane tickets on the internet. We can take a print out of the tickets too!

Moz: Yes. Internet is a very useful tool. Do you know any other uses of internet?

Jyoti: We can also listen to music on the internet.

Tejas: I saw the video of the fastest train on the internet. My brother got a mail from one of his friends about the video and I saw it.

Jyoti: We can also play games with others people. Isn't it?

Tejas: Yes. One more use of internet is we can talk with people anywhere and we can also send messages to friends and relatives.

Moz: Very good. You know many uses of internet.

To all: Why and when to use internet will be covered in internet safety

Concept/Info: Some of the things that you can do on the internet

Get information and search for information

Communicate with other people using email, chat, video conferencing

Listen to music and watch online videos

Play games with friends anywhere in the world

Order for things and have them delivered at home.

We can also buy tickets to travel on train, plane and tickets for movies in theaters.

Jyoti: Moz, How do we get information from the internet? Where is this internet?

Moz: The Internet is a huge collection of interconnected computers around the world.

Tejas: That means there are computers in India, in Europe, in USA and somewhere else and these are all connected to one another.

Jyoti: Oh! It is similar to telephones which connect us to other telephones around the world.

Moz: Yes. These computers talk to each other and also share information.

Concept: Internet

  • Internet is a huge collection of interconnected computers around the world.
  • These computers talk to each other and also share information.

Kaumudi/Usha: A picture of internet

Jyoti: So if we want to access the internet our computer needs a connection to the internet.

Moz: Correct.

Tejas(points to the ethernet cable): Is this the cable that provides the connection to the internet?

Moz: Yes. This is called a wired connection to the internet. This is an ethernet cable.

Jyoti: I have seen my dad connecting to internet without a cable at some airports.

Moz: The connection is through Wi-Fi which is a wireless connection.

Tejas: I have also seen a small device connected to the laptop to access the internet.

Moz: This device is called wireless USB. This is provided by the telephone operators. Good observations. You know quite a few methods of access to the internet.

Info box: To access internet a connection to the internet is needed.

There are two ways by which we can connect to the internet.

  1. Wired
  2. Wireless.

Kaumudi/Usha: The above with illustrations would be interesting.

Kaumudi/usha: An illustration of wired and wireless connections

Moz: Now let us move on to connect to the world wide web.

Jyoti (Usha:put jyoti here with the required expression): What is world wide web? We want to know how to access information on the internet.

Moz: The World Wide Web is where you will find the information. It is part of the internet.

Tejas: Is the information stored on the computers in the internet.

Moz: Yes. The information is stored on the computers in what are known as web pages.

Jyoti: This information must have been written by many people and stored on these computers.

Can I also write and share it with others.

Moz: Good thinking. Yes. You can. You will learn about this later.

Concept:

World wide web is a part of the internet.

It is a collection of millions of pages of information.

The information can include text, pictures, animations, sounds and video.

We can usually find information about any topic on the internet.

Anyone can contribute and share information on world wide web.

Jyoti (points to the browser icon): I am sure this is the application with which we can access the web pages.

Moz(points to the opened browser): This is called a browser.

Tejas: I have seen a different type of icon on my brother's computer to access the internet.

Moz: Yes. There are different browsers. Some of the common browsers are:

Firefox Internet Explorer Google Chrome

from Mozilla from Microsoft from Google

Apple Safari Opera

for MAC systems mostly used for mobiles

and hand held devices

Tejas: Do we need to learn how to use all of them?

Moz: Not necessary. The browsers look slightly different. Most of the functionalities are similar.

Jyoti: Looks like we have to enter something at the cursor.

Moz: You have to enter the address which is also called a URL of a web site that you want to access.

Tejas: Do we find all the pages related to a topic on a web site?

Moz: Yes. A web site is a collection of web pages. Usually you can find most of the information related to a topic on a web site.

Jyoti: So, if I want to know about “human body” then I can find detailed information at one web site.

Moz: Yes. Now enter the URL “ in the address bar.

Tejas moves the mouse pointer around the page.

Jyoti: The mouse pointer changes to a hand icon at English, Deutch etc., These words also appear to be underlined.

Moz: Those are called hyperlinks which means links to other pages.

Tejas: See. When I click on English I get an encyclopedia in English.

Jyoti: There is so much of information. Let us click on the Science hyperlink.

Info:

A hyperlink is a link within a web page to a related web page.

A hyperlink is usually underlined.

If you move your mouse over a hyperlink, it will change to the shape of a hand (usha an icon of hand please).

Clicking on the hyperlink takes you to a different page.

Tejas (points to the back arrow):Let us try this. I want to see what is in the Maths hyperlink.

Jyoti and Tejas thus discover that they can go back and forth to revisit the links that they visited.

They browse through various subjects.

Skill box: Usha: (point to back and forth arrows and write about their functions )

Jyoti (points to search) : Let us try search to find about “Human body” in Science.

Tejas: This is good. See there are further links and we can even search more.

Moz: Note that you are searching within the website currently.

Jyoti: I found something interesting here. I would like to visit this page again. Is there someway to save the link?

Moz (points to the bookmark): You have to use the bookmark.

Jyoti saves the web site address and learns how to retrieve it the next time she wants to refer to it.

Skills: Saving the address of a website (Usha: you may design the skill boxes as you think is best)

The address of a web site that you like to visit again can be saved as follows:

  1. click on “Bookmaks”
  2. Click on save “Bookmark this page”
  3. A box will then appear. You can now click on “Done” to add the page to your bookmarks.
  4. You can also change the name to an appropriate name. Ex: Jyoti enters “human body” for the web site address that she is saving.
  5. When you have many bookmarks you can organize them in folders. Ex: Jyoti creates a “Science” folder” and saves “human body” in this folder.

Tejas: Can we find the same information in other sites too?

Jyoti: How do we find a web site address when we do not know?

Moz: Good questions. You have to use a search engine to search for a website.

Jyoti: Is Google one of the search engines? I have seen my brother use it.

Moz: Yes. Again this is also a web site that gives you information.

Tejas: Oh! So a search engine provides the address of web sites.

Moz: Now enter the address of a search engine in the address bar.

Tejas enters the search engine address given by Moz.

Jyoti enters science in search. Address of many sites are displayed.

Jyoti: There are so many sites! Which one do we select ?

Tejas: There are some which are not relevant to us too.

Moz: Here are some tips on entering the search phrase that you enter.

In a box:

  1. To include complete phrase in the search use quotes “” around the phrase. Ex: Try Sachin Tendulkar the cricketer with and without quotes.

Tejas: “Sachin Tendulkar the cricketer” gives only sites about the cricketer.

  1. Use specific words. Ex: You want to know about a particular game. Try “Games” and “Foot ball game”.

Jyoti: The phrase “Foot ball game” gives specific web sites about the game.

  1. Use many words to get relevant sites. Ex: To find information about digestive system in humans enter following two phrases and see the results! “Digestive systems” and “Digestive systems in humans”

Tejas: “Digestive systems in humans” is much better. We get sites with information on only human digestive systems.

  1. If you want a word must be included in the search then add a + before the word. Ex: Try Spider man +comics and Spider man comics
  2. If you want a word to be excluded from the search then add a – before the word.

Ex: Try Usha provide an interesting example for kids.

Tejas: That was very interesting.

Jyoti: My brother's birthday is coming up. I want to send a greeting card. I have already done it using tux paint. How do I mail it?

Moz: Sure. You can use an application called e-mail service provided by some websites. Tomorrow more about this.
