CLASS TITLE:PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITIONIST

This is work providing nutrition assessment, education and counseling to clients in a county health department or in a community outreach service delivery program.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Provides current information on nutrition and diet to county health department staff and other workers in allied community health and social agencies.
  • Plans and conducts educational programs on nutrition, diet, and food service for professional and allied health personnel, teachers, social workers, and community health workers.
  • Plans and conducts nutrition education programs in schools, child care centers, senior citizen centers, and for the public.
  • Prepares and selects exhibits, posters, and literature for use in the public health nutrition program and for dissemination through various communications media.
  • Participates in studies and surveys on the relationship of diet to health and disease.
  • Maintains records and reports of work performed.
  • Collects, organizes, and/or interprets nutritional assessment and socioeconomic data on individual clients.
  • Develops patient/family nutrition care plans and documents in medical records.
  • Counsels patients/families for health promotion and normal nutrition in clinical and/or community programs.
  • Refers clients'/patients' families, as appropriate, to other nutrition, health, or social services agencies and maintains communication to ensure coordination and consistency of service.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the science and current practice of nutrition or dietetics.
  • Knowledge of the concepts and theories of nutrition or dietetics as it relates to growth, development, health or disease.
  • Knowledge of nutritional and dietary assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of the methods of compiling, organizing and analyzing data.
  • Ability to interpret anthropometric, biochemical, dietary and clinical data.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education to others.
  • Ability to develop educational plans and materials.
  • Ability to make nutritional assessments and develop nutrition care plans.
  • Ability to provide counseling and/or referral services to promote health and normal nutrition.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A registered dietitian as defined by the American Dietetic Association; or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition or food service management.
  • Must be licensed as a Dietitian/Nutritionist in accordance with Chapter 468, Florida Statutes, or be eligible to practice dietetics in accordance with Chapter 21M, Section 48.001, 48.002, or 48.003, Florida Administrative Code, or be working toward satisfactory completion of the required supervised experience component of Section 468.509, Florida Statutes.
