CLASS TITLE:NUTRITION EDUCATOR

This is professional work in providing nutrition education services to clients in a county public health unit and/or other health care setting or in a community outreach service delivery program.

  • Provides nutrition education, either individually or in groups, about food and nutrition requirements to develop and maintain sound eating and nutrition habits.
  • Participates in educational programs and activities and in selecting educational materials.
  • Collects, records, summarizes and tabulates information for evaluation of the effectiveness of nutrition education programs.
  • Develops, monitors, evaluates and revises nutrition education plans for individual clients not at medical high nutritional risk and documents in the appropriate records.
  • Documents all client contacts and services in appropriate records.
  • Coordinates nutrition education services of assigned clients with other health services and makes referrals as appropriate.
  • Certifies individuals for participation in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program in accordance with policies of the state WIC program.
  • Provides services that are in accordance with established criteria and standards of care to ensure that quality assurance standards are met.
  • Maintains records and reports of work performed.
  • Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the current science and practice of food and
  • nutrition, dietetics or food service.
  • Knowledge of normal nutrition principles and food needs throughout the life cycle.
  • Knowledge of meal planning, food budgeting and purchasing.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education to others in groups or individual instruction.
  • Ability to determine nutritional needs and develop nutrition education plans for individuals who are not at medical high nutritional risk.
  • Ability to educate individuals and families about food and nutritional needs.
  • Ability to participate in education or in-service training programs through teaching classes, demonstrating food practices, giving talks, and developing or selecting educational materials.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in public health nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition or food service management.
