CLASS TITLE:ASSISTANT CHIEF - FORESTRY

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work assisting in directing the Bureau of Forest Protection in the Division of Forestry. The employees in positions allocated to this class exercise independent judgment in formulating or assisting in the formulation of policies and procedures which have significant impact in personnel administration and/or preparation and administration of budgets related to wildfire operations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • Assists in the coordination of all phases of the Forest Protection Program.
  • Directs special surveys and studies relating to wildfire behavior, suppression, detection, prevention and laws related to open burning.
  • Develops policy positions in such areas as open burning regulations, wildfire resource management, wildfire communications and wildfire suppression training.
  • Assists in coordinating forest protection programs with other division activities and other governmental agencies.
  • Assists in preparing and reviewing program plans for establishing and controlling the activities of fire control units.
  • Assists in coordinating the activities of fire control units with rural, municipal, and volunteer fire departments and prepares courses of training for this purpose.
  • Assists in establishing guides and procedures for all phases of fire control activities.
  • Dispatched to large and complex fires to assist in the management of the wildfire suppression effort.
  • Coordinates preparation of new fire control publications and revisions in current publications.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in forestry and five years of professional forestry experience, two years of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in forestry and four years of professional forestry experience, two years of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
  • Professional, administrative or supervisory forestry experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
  • In accordance with Florida Statute 633, any person employed in this class must:
  • (1) Be a high school graduate or the equivalent, as the term may be determined by the Division of State Fire Marshal of the Department of Insurance.
  • (2) Not have been convicted of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, as the term is defined by law and must comply with Florida Statute 112.011(2)(b).
  • (3) Have his/her fingerprints on file with the Division of State Fire Marshal or an agency designated by the Division.
  • (4) Have a good moral character as determined by investigation under procedure established by the Division.
  • (5) Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination as prescribed by the division. Such examination may include but need not be limited to provisions of the National Fire Protection Association Pamphlet 1582.
  • (6) Be a nonuser of tobacco or tobacco products for at least 1 year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by the sworn affidavit of the applicant.
