Objective – 8th Grade Art is a survey course. It is designed to teach the students a variety of techniques using various media (materials). In Studio Art students will studythe Elements of Art: color, form, shape, texture, line, space, value and the Principles of Design: Balance, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Repetition, Proportion, Rhythm, Variety, and Unity. Students will learn how to use the elements and principles of art to create a pleasing composition (arrangements of elements) in many different media. Students will use drawing and painting media as well as sculptural media.We will also focus on Multi-cultural art and art history and learn about the cultural impacts of art on culture and society.
Sketchbook - Sketchbook assignments will be assigned based on the individual needs of a specific student to practice a particular skill.
Exams – We will have to take a pre-test and a post-test. The pre-test will NOT count toward your grade but will be a guide for me to follow to see what you already know and what you will need to learn. The Post-test will be counted as part of your final exam and will count toward your final grade. Your final exam grade will also include a final project.

Grading
Student work will be graded according to effort, following directions, and on technique. A student will always be graded fairly if they work hard.
Projects May include but are not limited to:
Color Theory – Students will study color theory and create a repetitive color wheel that will include 12 colors. Elements studied: Color, shape, line. Principles studied: Repetition, Unity, and Rhythm.
Cubist Still-life – We will study the art of several cubist artists including Picasso, Braque and Gris. We will set up several still-life compositions for the students to draw from. Elements studied: Line, Color, Value, Shape, and Texture. Principles studied: Emphasis, Balance, Rhythm and Unity.
Escher Tessellations – Students will study the artwork of MC Escher and create their own unique tessellations. Elements studied: Line, Shape, and Color. Principles studied: Pattern, Repetition, Rhythm and Unity.
Ceramic Coil Vessels – Students will create a shallow plate or bowl using the coil method of hand building. We will look at student created coil vessels and students will use that as inspiration. Students will then glaze their projects. Elements studied: Shape, Form, Line, texture and Color. Principles studied: Pattern, Repetition, and Proportion.
Surrealist Perspective – Students will learn how to create correct one point perspective drawings. Students will also study Surrealism and will add drawings or collage elements to the perspective to change it into a surrealist work of art. Elements studied: Space, Line, Shape, Value, texture and Form. Principles studied: Movement, Balance, Emphasis, Unityand Proportion.
Printmaking Project – After studying the work of artist Andy Warhol, students will create a linoleum block carving and print it in many colors to create a Warhol style of art. Elements studied: Line, Space, Texture, and Color. Principles studied: Balance, Emphasis, Repetition and Unity.
Erase Yourself/Self-portrait – Students will have a photo taken of themselves with props or hats in a fun way. We will then cut the photos in half and students will have to draw in the missing part. Elements studied: Line, shape, form and value. Principles studied: Movement, Proportion.
Aboriginal Dot Painting – Students will study the Australian Aboriginal dot paintings and create a dot painting in that style. Elements studied: Texture, Shape, Color and Space. Principles studied: Balance, Emphasis, Rhythm, Movement, Pattern, Variety and Unity.
