Class Procedures (Rev. 07/13)

Kay M. Hedrick

  1. Entering the Classroom You are to enter the classroom without screaming, running, or otherwise causing chaos. Students who do not do this will be asked to leave the room and reenter as expected. It is expected that you check the bellwork board when you enter and pick up handouts or textbooks if instructed to do so. You should then get anything you need around the room (grade check, pencil sharpening, tissues, etc.) Once seated, check the independent work assignment on the board again and begin your work. You may also use this time to briefly speak with the teacher to check your grade, schedule an appointment to make up a test or get extra help. Do not wait for the bell to ring or for the teacher to signal you to get to work.
  2. Class Materials Needed Please bring paper, writing utensils, notebook, textbooks or novels to class each day. At times you may be instructed to bring additional supplies.
  3. Seating Seats are assigned by the teacher. Seating assignments may only be changed at the teacher’s discretion.
  4. Independent WorkEvery class session will begin with bellwork. This assignment will always be found on the dry erase board at the front of the classroom. Any handouts or books that you will need on a given day will be addressed in the bellwork instructions. Independent Work is REQUIRED.
  5. Coming to Attention Group and independent work will take place often in this classroom. At times, the teacher will need to quiet the class. When the teacher raises her hand, you are expected to stop your conversation or work, look at the teacher and raise your hand as well. Wait for the teacher’s instructions or comments.
  6. Leaving the Classroom / Hall Passes Leaving the room to visit the restroom, locker or other locations is permitted only in emergencies. A pass is needed for leaving the class. Do not ask to use the restroom or to go to your locker before class begins; just go before you get to class. A maximum of three passes is permitted per quarter. Each pass is recorded, so use them wisely. Once three have been used, there will be no more.
  7. Class Dismissal The bell does not dismiss the class, the teacher does. Do not pack your things or leave you seats until you are dismissed by the teacher.
  8. Off Limit Areas Students should never be in the teacher’s seat(s), behind the teacher’s desk or on the teacher’s computer at any time. Students are forbidden to enter the English Commons area without the teacher’s permission.
  9. Classroom Interruptions The teacher will answer the door and the phone unless a student is asked to do so. NO COMMENTS to visitors – continue working. If the teacher is speaking with someone or is on the phone this does not give the students permission to talk or leave seats. Remain quiet and be respectful.Continue working, if applicable. When announcements are made, become quiet and listen.
  10. Assignment Protocol Please use only loose leaf notebook paper or perforated paper that can be removed from a notebook without fringe. Label all class assignments in the upper right hand corner of the paper as follows:

  3. Grade Inquiries If you are concerned about how you are doing in class, do not approach the teacher during class time. Before school, after school, at break or before or after class are suggested as times to address this issue.
  4. Keep the Classroom Clean It is expected that you help keep the classroom clean. It’s easiest not to create a mess. Please use the trashcan to dispose of litter, NOT the floor. Throw gum in the trash if you no longer want it.
