Key Question: Why Images?
Teachers strive to find ways to engage students with content, while challenging them to think critically and creatively, and to build connections between ideas. Using images allows students of all levels and learning styles an access point to rigorous content, while encouraging them to think in ways that diverge from typical structures. Instruction through images helps students to build stories about content, and stories help students remember what they’ve learned.
Extended Activity Notes
1. Begin with two images
a. What concept would you like students to think more deeply about? It might be something you want to create discussion around, or something you’d like them to better visualize.
b. How many image pairs do you want to use? Should each student group have a different set or can students use the same pair and come to a variety of responses? Can students choose the image pairs themselves and trade with another group?
2. Write down questions or statements that you could help to determine how the images are connected.
a. Would students benefit from seeing the process of question generation modeled? Would they benefit from sample questions that might get them started? For example, sample questions could include “What is similar about your two images?” or “What do you wonder about when the two images are side by side?”
3. Investigate the images further, and determine the key connection.
a. Some of the images you use, or the history/content that underlies them, might not be familiar to students. The teacher can ask students to further investigate the person, event, scene, etc., in the image, and in this investigation they might determine the key connection.
b. Some image pairs will have multiple connections, depending on student perspective, interests or content knowledge base. Students can list all of the ways that the images might be connected and choose the one that is most relevant, or most interesting. The teacher might guide students toward choosing the connection point that would be most beneficial to the overall lesson purpose.
4. Clarify the connection using additional images
a. Once students have determined the connection, ask them to choose additional images to add to their pair that could make the connection more easily grasped by others. The teacher might choose a set number of images for students to add (for ex., 3-5 additional images), or they might suggest that students use a combination of images and words to explain the connection.
5. Create your ‘final product’ and share
a. Ask students to arrange their images/words into a final product that they can share with their classmates, which clearly explains how their original images are connected. These final products can be posted, and students can review them with a poster walk or pass them between groups in class. The teacher could also provide a template for students to place their original and new images in, depending on the needs and grade of the group.

Marking the 50th anniversary of Haring's birth on May 4, a team of artists recreated the mural which was originally done in 1982 as Haring's first major outdoor project. The original mural only existed for a few months before the Day-Glo colors began to decompose in the sun and Haring painted over the piece. (Photo by Mario Tama/Getty Images)
