All: Prepare for post it chats AND COME UP WITH AT LEAST ONE OF YOUR OWN HIGH ORDER THINKING QUESTION WITH YOUR OWN THOUGHTS IN RESPONSE TO IT. IN ADDITION, CONTINUE TO NOTE WHAT THE DETAILS OF THE TEXT ARE REVEALING ABOUT THE THEME. ALSO, STOP AND JOT WHAT YOU ARE LEARNING ABOUT THE TIME PERIOD THROUGH THE TEXT. WITH YOUR GROUP MEMBERS, DECIDE ON A “REAL LIFE” QUESTION ABOUT THE TIME PERIOD IN WHICH YOUR STORY TAKES PLACE OR WAS WRITTEN IN (1960’S FOR WATSONS AND THE CAY AND GREAT DEPRESSION FOR BUD. INVESTIGATE THE QUESTION AND BE PREPARED TO SHARE YOUR FINDINGS IN THE NEXT PACKET.

WATSONS: READ CHAPTERS THREE-SIX

1.  Why do you think Larry Dunn is a bully? Why might Byron think it is necessary to treat him so harshly?

2.  Why is Kenny sorry he told Byron about Larry Dunn’s “Maytag washes?”

3.  Does your opinion of Larry change after you learn that he is wearing a t shirt, a ripped windbreaker and tennis shoes with holes in the bottom? Why or why not?

4.  Do you think Momma would have been justified if she burned Byron? Why or why not?

5.  Why do you think Byron is more upset about killing the bird than hurting other people at school?

THE CAY: READ CHAPTERS 3 AND 4

1.  What were Philip’s first reactions when he discovered he had been shipwrecked on a raft with a black man?

2.  Although Philip has been taught to call adults “mister,” he called the black man, “Timothy.” Timothy on the other hand, addressed Philip as “young bahss.” What did this tell you about the relationship between the two?

3.  Why did Philip have negative feelings towards Timothy even though he was trying to offer consolation to the boy?

4.  How did Timothy comfort Philip when he displayed terror over his blindness?

5.  What did Timothy’s words tell about his ability to sympathize with Philip’s fears?

BUD, NOT BUDDY read chapters 3-8

1.  Bud has faced many different challenges so far in his life. Describe them. Tell what he does to overcome each of them.

2.  Describe the town of Hooperville. Tell whether or not it was typical of other towns during the Great Depression. (May require a little research).

3.  How did Bud get revenge on the Amos family?

4.  Bud makes a list of rules that he uses in his life. What are some of the rules? Which do you think are accurate and which do you think are foolish? Explain.

5.  What is Bud probably thinking when Mr. Amos closes and locks the door on the old dark shed? Pretend you are Bud and write your thoughts down!!!
