POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: PUBLIC WORKS ASSISTANT IN CHARGE OF CEMETERY AND PARKS

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Public Works Assistant works under the general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent. The Public Works Assistant is directly responsible for the maintenance and appearance of the cemetery, city parks and other city owned property. Must be able to work independently as well as under direct supervision of Public Works Superintendent or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.Must be able to work in all weather conditions and be proficient in operating lawn mowers, snow plowsand other equipment as directed by the PW Supt.

DUTIES OF PUBLIC WORKS ASSISTANT

1. Mow, fertilize, weed and rake leaves at cemetery, city parks and all other city owned property;

2. Maintain and repair/replace sprinkler systems and other irrigation systems as needed;

3. Prevent/identify potential pest issues and take appropriate action to remedy any problems;

4. Maintain and perform repairs on lawn mowers, pickups and other small equipment as needed;

5. Maintain and perform repairs on various park and cemetery equipment, including but not limited to: public restrooms, tables, benches, garbage cans, playground equipment and memorials;

6. Operate snow plow to clear city streets and sidewalks. May require long hours and late nights/early mornings during inclement weather;

7. Various painting, including but not limited to: crosswalks, parking stripes, garbage cans, picnic tables and benches;

8. Remove(spray) weeds and other debris from curbs, city streets and city rights of way;

9. Change banners on street lights lining main street to coincide with events throughout the year.

10. Report activities and propose future projects and/or expenditures to the PW Supt;

11. Keep time and material records for each job;

12. Keep inventory of supplies on hand;

13. Performs duties outlined in other city ordinances pertaining to the public works department as well as other tasks as assigned by PW Supt.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Must possess valid driver’s license.

2. Must possess or acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within the first 6 months of employment.

3. Must acquire and maintain a Washington State Public Pesticide Applicator License within the first year of employment.

4. Must be able to perform manual work for extended periods in all weather conditions.

5. Must be able to lift 75 lbs.
