Thematic Unit: The Short Story

Time frame: September - November

Enduring Understanding: Students will understand that short stories can offer a snapshot into the lives of a cultural group.

Essential questions: 1. How is daily life portrayed in short stories?

2. What are the roles of social-economic classes, racism, sexism, and ageism?

3. How are moral topics conveyed in short stories?

Objectives: Students will be able to identify elements of fiction, the roles of characters within fiction and the portrayal of daily life, by reading and analyzing short stories in the target language.

Introduction to fiction
·  Teacher defines fictional writing such as short stories novels, plays, etc. (7.1.AL.A.2)
·  Teacher identifies the elements of fiction. (7.1.AL.A.2)
·  Teacher highlights types of figurative language found in short stories. (7.1.AL.A.2)
·  Teacher reads to the class a simple story in the target language that the students are familiar with such as Beauty and the Beast, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, etc. (7.1.AL.A.2, 6)
·  In pairs the students identify the basic elements of the fictional piece using a graphic organizer. (7.1.AL.B.2, 4)
Character
·  Students provide definition of character. (7.1.AL.B.2)
·  Teacher defines protagonist, antagonist, and secondary characters. (7.1.AL.A.2)
·  Students read a story rich in characters and list them into categories. (7.1.AL.A.2, 6, 7; 7.1.AL.B.2)
·  Students discuss the lists’ accuracy. (7.1.AL.B.4)
Setting and Mood
·  Teacher provides definition of setting in fiction; time and place. (7.1.AL.A.2)
·  Class discussion on mood and its use in fictional writing, such as Snoopy, using leveled readers in the target language. (7.1.AL.B.2, 4)
·  Students provide examples of how mood can be altered in stories, television shows, movies, emotion games, etc. (7.1.AL.B.2, 4)
·  Class listens to a story on audio with strong setting language, sound effects, music, etc. as teacher uses TPR method. (7.1.AL.A.1-2, 6)
·  In groups of three-four the students take the story they listened to and rewrite it so that the setting and mood of the story change. (7.1.AL.C.3)
Theme
·  Teacher identifies theme and moral. (7.1.AL.A.2)
·  Students will write the theme for three stories that have been read in class. (7.1.AL.A.2, 6)
·  Students themes are discussed in class. (7.1.AL.B.2)
Style or Voice
·  Students will complete a guided writing where they identify their individual style. (7.1.AL.B.2)
·  Teacher will read the descriptions to the class and the class will attempt to identify the student. (7.1.AL.A.2)
·  Teacher identifies the components of style in fiction. (7.1.AL.A.1-2)
·  Teacher provides the students with examples of different styles and they are discussed in class. (7.1.AL.B.4)
Writer’s Workshop
In groups of 3-4,
·  Students will create characters for a short story. (7.1.AL.C.3)
·  Students will create the setting for a short story. (7.1.AL.C.3)
·  Students will create a theme for a short story. (7.1.AL.C.3)
·  Students will put together the elements of character, setting, and theme, created previously, to write a short story. (7.1.AL.C.3)
