Mole Day Project

Due Date: October 23rd – Mole Day!! (Late Projects will NOT be accepted!)

Mole Day is a nationally recognized “holiday” for celebrating Chemistry. It is traditionally held on October 23rd, or 10/23. In Chemistry, the mole is a counting unit, similar to a dozen. Whereas a dozen is 12 of something, a mole is 6.02 x 1023 of something. The number 6.02 x 1023, called Avogadro’s Number, is the number of items in one mole of anything.

Your project must include a dimensional analysis problem relating to your concept. It must contain a minimum of 3 conversions and include Avogadro’s number. (Example: you do a “Frosty the Mole-Man” poster. For your conversion, you figure out how many molecules of H2O it would take to make Frosty. First, you start with a probable weight for Frosty…say 50 pounds. Convert from pounds to grams, then from grams to moles using the atomic mass of ice (H2O), then from moles to molecules using Avogadro’s number.)

We will be celebrating Mole Day in class on 10/23 and presenting our projects. Presentations should be kept brief, less than 2 minutes per person. You just need to show the class what you made, tell them how you came up with the idea, and explain your dimensional analysis calculation.

Some project ideas are listed below:

·  Make a poster or model of a mole in one of these categories: celebrity moles, scientist moles, cartoon moles, secret agent moles, rock-n-roll moles, sports moles, storybook moles.

·  Construct a “mole” bile.

·  Glorify the mole with a clever poster or banner.

·  Make a Mole Day treat (“Mole”asses cookies, Mole cakes, etc.) Maximum of 5 per class, and you must make enough to share with the whole class.

·  Write a Mole poem, story, or comic.

·  Compose a song and sing it.

·  Put on a puppet show or play.

·  Make a game.

·  Design a greeting card and send it to your favorite chemistry teacher.

·  Decorate your classroom door.

·  Create a mole video.

·  Think of your own original idea!

Originality / A new and original idea. / This has been done once or twice before. / I’ve seen this before, but not too often. / Someone does this during every period. / This idea is already on display in our room.
Use of the word “Mole” and “6.02 x 1023” on the front of the project / Has both “Mole” and “6.02 x 1023” on the front of the project. / Has either “Mole” or “6.02 x 1023” on the front of the project, but not both. / has neither “Mole” nor “6.02 x 1023” on the front of the project.
Creativity/Design / Wow!! / A nice job. Creative, neat and organized. / Neat and organized. / Looks a bit sloppy, you should have taken more time. / Looks like you put this together in 5 minutes while walking to class.
Dimensional Analysis Problem / All 3 steps accurate, relates to project, answer, sig figs and units correct. / One step not accurate, or answer wrong, or sig figs and units incorrect. / Two steps wrong, or one step and answer, or one step and sig figs/units wrong. / Three steps wrong, or two steps and answer, or two steps and sig figs/units wrong. / Didn’t do it, or it’s all wrong.
