Dear Parent or Guardian:

Enclosed is a student report that provides your student’s English as a Second Language (ESL) test results for the latest unit of their ESL textbook that student’s completed.

These tests are an important part of the ESL Program at Malden High School. The purpose of the benchmark test is to determine how well students are achieving English language proficiency and reading study skills.

Your child’s curriculum and goals are aligned with the goals of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. We have high expectations for your student to achieve the best score possible. Please converse with your son or daughter about the test and test results to assist us in helping them to achieve the greatest amount of academic success.

The benchmark test will be given at the end of each unit or section of their textbook. Your child will take a benchmark test about once every 4-6 weeks. Student’s answer multiple-choice questions that address recently learned vocabulary, students read passages and answer reading comprehension questions in addition to a written response.

We plan to report the scores to teachers, students, and parents and work as a team to ensure academic success. If your student’s performance is below level, we will construct a plan to address the students’ needs. You are encouraged to schedule a meeting with your student’s ESL teacher(s) or counselor to discuss your son or daughter’s scores.

Thank you for your support in educating your child.

Sincerely,

Malden High School ESL Teachers
