Parks and Recreation Department Assistant Director
FLSA:Exempt
Reports To:Parks and Recreation Director
Directly Supervises:Maintenance Supervisor, Program Coordinator, Athletic Coordinator, Concessions Manager and Receptionist
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Assist the Director in the operations of the Parks and Recreation Department
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise department employees and ensure their duties are performed
Conduct weekly meetings with Maintenance Supervisor and Athletic Coordinator, Program Coordinator, receptionist and concessions manager on a regular basis to determine needs and assign duties
Ensure proper cooperation and coordination between the maintenance department, athletic program and Gale Center needs
Research and recommend purchasing for department needs to the Director
Provide onsite supervision for athletic programs, community programs/events and concessions
Make a concession stands operating properly
Make sure athletic coordinator and program has what is needed for programs to operate
Make sure all monies collected from registrations, concessions and programming fees are correct and accounted for
Serve as inventory control person for the department
Conduct weekly detailed inspections of playgrounds and file recorded forms
Research and recommend new equipment purchase
Work schedule for concession workers
Marketing
Ensure marketing awareness strategies are effective
Maintain website
Maintain FaceBook and Twitter
Volunteers
Assure background screenings are performed on all staff, all volunteers, umpires, referees,and coaches
Manage Concession Stand Operations
Hiring seasonal employees
Serve Safe Certification
Bookkeeping
Contracts and Agreements
Assist in negotiating contracts and agreements
Ensure contracts and agreements are up to date
Ensure contracts and agreements are upheld
Working Conditions
Work in office environment; sustained posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time. Full-time, permanent position:
Regularly scheduled hours year-round, with weekend and/or night work
Always on call
Work condition will be indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions
Perform other duties as directed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities that would typically be acquired through:
High school degree or equivalent education
A graduate of an accredited 4 year college or university in Parks and Recreation Administration or related area, Master Degree preferred; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications, Licenses and Registration:A valid MS Driver’s License is required. Certifiable in basic first-aid/CPR/AED and in national youth sports coaches association. Certifiable as a Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP), Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI), Safe Serve, preferred, or must be obtained within one year of employment
Two years of experience in this or a related field; or
Any equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience, with additional work experience substituting for the required education on a year for year basis
DESCRIPTIONS OF WORK EXPECTATIONS
Assists the Director in the following areas:

Grant proposals and applications
Development of new parks facilities and programs
Attend meetings relating to park activities
Attends Mayor and Board of Aldermen meetings in absence of the Director
Conducts and maintains an inventory list and safety program for all facilities, playgrounds, vehicles and equipment. Update the Director upon completion and indicate items that need immediate attention.
Promotes the department of parks and recreation and the City of Hernando on the local, district, state and national level.
Maintains good public relations with the community.
