JOB DESCRIPTION
CITY OF CAMDENTON, MISSOURI
POSITION TITLE: Clerk Typist
DEPARTMENT: Police
REPORTS TO: Desk Sergeant
DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the desk sergeant the clerk typist performs a variety of clerical duties. Specific responsibilities include:
- Answer the telephone and maintain phone log, assist public with required information when possible or forward call to appropriate person
- operate police radio by disseminating and receiving information to and from field officers as required
- process case reports, case log cards, photo card file and fingerprint cards, complete distribution of report form and clearance for each case when pertinent
- assist with initial requirements for criminal charges; type reference cards for municipal court, check for prior convictions, type complaints, etc
- assist desk sergeant in miscellaneous other office requirements such as probation list and warrant file from Camdenton municipal court; complete follow up tasks from each court date, monitor file on wanted persons and open case reports
- file case reports, supplemental reports and other items as needed
- take reports from walk-in persons as requested
- other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In order to hold the clerk typist position an employee must:
- possess experience in modem office practices including computer skills
- be able to understand and execute verbal and written instructions
- be able to work under standard operating procedures and abide by policies stated in or granted by the municipal code
- be able to work cooperatively and effectively with supervisors and other employees
- have a high school diploma or equivalent, experience in the area of law enforcement would be an asset but not required
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job the employee will:
- frequently required to sit and talk or hear
- use hands to operate, lift, grasp, carry, push or pull 25 pounds
- specific vision ability required to include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
- ability to operate a keyboard and view computer screens for an extended period of time
- sight, hearing, speech, frequent lateral mobility
- lifting items above head
- climbing steps
- stooping and bending
- squatting, sorting, kneeling and reaching to ground level and overhead as required for such tasks as retrieving files
- be able to hold and grip objects
- mentally analyze a situation
- solve problems
- make decisions under pressure in area of responsibility
- may work a varied schedule including some evenings and weekends
- maybe subject to emergency call back on off duty hours
- may be subject to pre-employment physical and drug testing
- subject to monthly random drug and alcohol testing
- may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, dust and/or pollen
- primarily work indoors with heating and cooling regulated in a general office environment
- occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and the risk of electrical shock
INITIAL MERIT LEVEL: Hourly employee
The clerk typist is appointed, employed and compensated at the discretion of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.
