CITROEN ROBOT DANCES UP THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC CHARTS

The Citroën C4 dancing robot, the star of the acclaimed Citroën television advertisement for its newest model, the C4, is dancing up the Australian music charts, or rather Les Rythmes Digitales and the music for the advertisement, ‘Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat)’, has entered the Aria Australian music charts at Number 38.

Already a top five hit in the UK, both Citroën Australia and local distributor Shock Records believe that this is just a starting point.

“As the robot proves, it’s a great dance tune,” says Miles Williams, General Manager for Citroën in Australia, “and the advertisement has already been one of the most popular downloads ever seen on the internet. Throw in Justin Timberlake’s chorographer and it has to be major hit in Australia, too!”

“And, when it comes to acid house, Les Rythmes Digitales have always been my first choice!” adds Mr Williams.

So, if Citroën is behind the C4, Justin Timberlake’s chorographer, Marty Kudelka, is behind the dancing and the production houses responsible for ‘Finding Nemo’ produced the animation, who are Les Rhythmes Digitales?

With a name like Les Rhythmes Digitales, lead by Jacques Lu Cont and a history of being the darlings of the French nu-disco movement, alongside bands like Daft Punk, it would be tempting to think that the music’s creator is as French as the car dancing to it.

But, Non.

Jacques Lu Cont may have been born in the excruciatingly hip Paris suburb of Midiville, but it was while his English parents were on holiday in Paris, a fact that is self evident the moment Lu Cont opens his mouth! His parents may have been classical pianists, but Jacques – real name Stuart Price – took his inspiration from Kraftwerk and Africa Bambaataa, as well as French proto-electronica figures such as Pierre Henry and Jean-Jacques Perry. Home-produced demo tapes lead a contract with the renowned British label, Wall of Sound, his Gallic alias and 1996’s CD, “Kontakte”, followed closely by his second album, ‘Liberation’.

“Jacques Your Body (make me sweat)” is Lu Conts’s second single and the title of the acid-house epic is clever pun on Steve “Silk” Hurley’s hit for the Chicago house king-pin from a decade earlier. Its this English sense of humour that has set Lu Cont apart from his French-born rivals. His third album, Darkdancer, was almost called, as homage to the much sampled Phil Collins, No Jaquet Required and for linguistic trainspotters, the name of the band has a deliberate grammatical error: it should be Digitaux. Lu Cont is also a noted DJ and remixer, as well as leading live act at some of the UK’s top music festivals.

Jacques Your Body (Make Me Sweat) by Les Rythmes Digitales is released in Australia by Shock Records and is available from all good music shops, catalogue number CORX213CD.
