Course Description:

This course consists of 24 hours of clinical assignments each week.. Students will be assigned in a radiography department to complete clinical competencies correlating with academic coursework.

Your participation in the WSRT conference in Wenatchee will be required. Date and times will be announced as they become available. Please start planning, now, to attend this event. There are fund raising opportunities with the Rad Tech Club to help relieve the burden of travel, housing or registration. This conference will not occur until spring quarter --- this is your advanced warning!!

Two seniors will be elected to participate in the “Student Quiz Bowl” as representatives of our program.

You are required to maintain membership in the WSRT throughout this program. Current CPR documentation and annual TB testing / documentation is required.

Course Outline:

This course will include the following:

  • Observation and performance of radiographic procedures
  • Performance of routine radiographic duties
  • Participation as a member of the health care team

Student Performance Objectives (Course Competencies):

Upon completion in their assigned clinical facility, the student will be able to:

  • Observe, assist, and/or perform in assigned radiographic areas
  • Under direct / indirect supervision, be actively involved with the related procedures in assigned areas
  • Perform duties assigned by the clinical instructor and/or supervising technologist
  • Communicate, cooperate, and perform as an effective member of the health care team
  • Perform clinical competencies and assignments
  • Develop efficient and organized work habits
  • Demonstrate empathy and provide quality patient care to a diverse clientele
  • Utilize radiation protection guidelines for all procedures

Methods of Instruction:

Students will be assigned in clinical settings with specific competencies and assignments to complete. Students will work under the direct / indirect supervision of a registered technologist, or qualified health care provider. A clinical evaluation form will be completed after each rotation, at midterm and the end of the term by the clinical facility and the BTC faculty.

Student Assignments and Requirement:

  • Clinical Competencies – Each must be passed with a minimum grade of 80% (C+).
  • Competency Testing Procedure:

- Each exam requires that 2 signatures must be obtained PRIOR to competency testing on an exam.

- Students may receive two signatures on one day, OR one signature and a competency on one day. The student may not complete all three on the same day.

- Each competency requires that 5 radiographic structures be identified.

  • Clinical Procedures – includes radiographic room equipment competencies and objectives as assigned
  • Clinical Evaluations – Mid-term evaluation ( due Feb 14) and End-of-Term evaluation (March 28) Interim evaluations may be requested
  • Clinical Timesheets – turned in to designated clinic instructor on or before the 5th of each month.
  • Clinical Preparedness – student uniform, student nametag, radiation monitoring device and radiographic markers with the student’s initials (see clinic handbook for complete description)

Attendance Requirements:

Clinical absences will be documented as infractions to clinical requirements. There is a section in your clinical and student handbooks which address “documentation of infractions”. Review this section to see that:

2 documentations = 1 grade level lower (for example from A to A-)

3 documentations = 2 grade levels lower (A to B+)

4 documentations = 3 grade levels lower (A to B)

5 documentations = 4 grade levels lower (A to B-)

Each absence will be recorded as a documentation.

Student absences in which calls were not made (before the start of the shift) to both the clinical facility and program faculty will be counted as two documentations. You must call prior to your assignment to both sites.

College policy mandates students attend 90% of clock hours for any course offering. Students missing more than 27 hours of clinical time will not pass this course.

As faculty become aware of specific events requiring absence in clinical assignments (death in family, surgery for self…..) the possibility of “make up” time will be discussed among faculty.

Make up time must be completed before the end of the quarter. Make up time is not allowed on days when the college is closed (quarter breaks, holidays)

Evaluation and Grading Standards:

Clinical Competencies

At least 89 comps successfully completed = 100% of comp average

At least 84comps successfully completed = 94% of comp average

At least 79comps successfully completed = 88% of comp average

At least 74 comps successfully completed = 76% of comp average

Clinical Procedures: Students will be able to test on procedures as they pass didactic and lab instruction of each unit.

Competencies ………………………………………………………………………………….. 60 points

Equipment / Room Competencies………………………………………………………….....10 points

Room and equipment competencies must be completed

before a student competency tests or obtains signatures at a facility.

They do not need to be repeated on return to that facility.

Timesheets……………………………………………………………………………………..…15 points

One late or missing time sheet = 65% of 15 points

Two late or missing time sheets = 50% of 15 points

Time sheets are due by the 5th of the following month

Clinical Evaluations………………………………………………………………….……….…15 points

Total points available = 100 points

Grading Scale:

94-100% A 83-84% B- 68-72% D

92-93% A- 80-82% C+ Below 67% F

89-91% B+ 76-79% C

85-88% B- 73-75% C-

Students must maintain an average of C (76%) in all radiography related courses in order to progress in this program. Students placed on clinical probation will not receive a grade higher than “C” for this course.

Student Uniform:

  • Students are required to wear the clinic uniform as described in the student handbook. This includes wearing the student nametag, wearing the radiation monitoring device and having radiographic markers with the student’s initials.
  • Students who do not meet dress code requirements will receive infraction documentation and may be sent home.

Attendance:

  1. Students are expected to be at the clinic site as assigned.
  2. Students who will be late or absent must contact both the Clinical Instructor for the cohort and the assigned Clinic Supervisor, at least 15 minutes prior to the shift starting.
  3. Sandra Woodfield for the Bellingham Cohort, Tracy Bailey for the Everett Cohort and Michelle Warner of North Seattle must approve all changes to the assigned clinic scheduleprior to the occurrence.

Clinic Supervision Policy:

A. Until achieving clinical competency in an examination, the student will be under the direct supervision of a registered radiographer at all times. The following are the essential components of direct supervision:

  1. The radiographer will determine if the student is capable of performing the examination.

2. The radiographer will check the patient to see if their condition contraindicates the

performance of the examination by the student.

  1. The radiographer will be present with the student during performance of the examination.

B. A student who has achieved clinical competency in an exam may perform those examinations under indirect supervision. A registered radiographer will be in the vicinity of and immediately available to the student during the examination. “In the vicinity” is interpreted to mean that the radiographer can hear the student should the student call for help from the door of the radiographic room. This policy applies regardless of the location of the examination.

C. Regardless of the level of supervision required, all radiographs produced by students will be checked and approved by a radiographer prior to dismissal of the patient.

D. All repeat radiographs will be performed with a registered radiographer present in the radiographic room during the repeat, regardless of the student’s level of supervision.

E. Students are allowed to demonstrate competency on procedures in the clinical setting after they have successfully passed the Lab Performance Competency Test and the Section Test in Radiographic Positioning and Anatomy.

F. Portable radiography must be performed with a registered technologist present, regardless of the student’s level of supervision.

G. Students who are found in violation of the Clinic Supervision Policy will be sent home, and the student will be required to make up missed time before the end of the quarter. Hours missed will be considered unexcused.

Course paperwork will not be accepted after March 26th
