Network Infrastructure Technician

Pre-Competition Activity – Task 1

Competitor Name:______

Autonomous System______

Station / AS Number:

Introduction

Day 1competition has 3Tasks.

You have been allocated a Station / AS Number. This number will be referred to as X in these tasks and associated diagrams and tables.

Task 1: Configuration Fault Finding

Task 2 – Network Configuration

Task 3 – IP Addressing Scheme

What you should have:

  • This script
  • 3 accompanying diagrams:
  • Appendix 1- Configuration Fault Finding Diagram
  • Appendix 2 - Configuration Fault Finding Data Tables
  • Appendix 3 – IP Subnetting Diagram
  • Blank paper
  • Pens/Pencils

If at any point you feel you are finished and you leave your station, you may not come back and continue work.

If you cross through any work it will not be marked.

If you feel that you require assistance, possibly due to a suspected hardware failure, please put your hand up and inform a judge.

Task / Description / % Weighting
1 / Configuration Fault Finding / 20

With the information provided, your task is to troubleshoot a small autonomous system by identifying and documenting a number of faults and then reconfiguring the devices within the AS to enable full connectivity to a WorldskillsUK server.

Using the network diagram and data tables provided [Appendix 1 and 2] begin your investigation to identify potential faults and solutions. For each fault that you identify, you should record the following information:

  • Symptoms caused by the fault.
  • Commands used to identify the fault.
  • Actions required to reconfigure a device to correct the fault.

Use the Fault Documentation Sheets to record this information for each fault you correct. Clearly separate each fault description from the next with a ruled line.

Once you have full connectivity to the WorldskillsUK server from both host devices then all faults will have been corrected.

At this point save a screenshot of the ip configuration of workstation WXto the fileDay1_Task1 < AS Name>.jpg

Then upload via FTP the file Day1_Task1 AS Name>.jpg from your workstation to ftp://222.2.2.2.

2 / Network Configuration / 15

Following your successful fault finding, a number of configuration changes are required to improve the functionality and security of your autonomous system.

Using Appendix 1 as your reference diagram, reconfigure the network devices to accommodate the following changes:

Add two additional Vlans:

Vlan / Name / Subnet / Default Gateway / Ports
30 / SERVER-FARM / 10.10.10.192/29 / 10.10.10.198 / Fa0/15 – 19
40 / Management / 10.10.10.200/29 / 10.10.10.206 / Fa0/11 – 14

Configure a virtual server on your workstation WX with a static IP address of 10.10.10.193. This server will provide DNS, HTTP and TFTP services.

Configure the virtual server to host a DNS primary forward lookup zone. Use your autonomous system name as the zone name eg Nottingham.org.uk.

Add hostA records to the zone for each device in your AS.

Configure a forwarder IP address for “All other DNS Domains” to 222.2.2.2

Configure a static NAT translation to the virtual server using 200.200.X.200.

Configure both switches in your AS with an IP address from the Management Vlan to provide remote administrative access.

Switch / IP Address

Enable telnet on each router and switch in your AS with the password of your choice.

Telnet Password

Create an Access Control List solution to restrict full connectivity between your AS and the outside world using the following criteria:

  1. WiFi hosts - no access to outside AS
  2. Wired hosts - only HTTP and SMTP access to outside AS
  3. SERVER-FARM hosts - only DNS, FTP, HTTP access to outside AS
  4. Management hosts - should retain full access to outside AS
  5. Telnet access to router and switches - only allow access from within your AS and from 222.2.2.2

At this point save a screenshot of the DNS records in the forward lookup zone to the file Day1_Task2 < AS Name.jpg

Then upload via FTP the file Day1_Task2 < AS Name.jpgto ftp://222.2.2.2.
