PC Applications for Networks (3 Credits)

COURSEDESCRIPTION

This course will provide an overview of Microsoft Office and several desktop operating systems which are typically supported on a local area network. Software covered will include command line interfaces, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and Windows. Additional topics will include the Internet, alternative desktop operating systems, networking basics, software licensing, file management, hardware selection, software integration and viruses. The impact of running and supporting this software on a network will be emphasized.

Training will consist of lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, step-by-step lab exercises from the textbook, SimNet software training, weekly homework projects and the completion of student projects. Note: Graduation credit will not be awarded for CIS 100, 101, or 102 if the student also completes CIS 155. Graduation credit will not be awarded for both CIS 110 and for CIS 155.

LEARNING GOALS

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Install network application software.
  2. Demonstrate the basic skills needed to use DOS, Linux and windows operating environments. (Core Goal 2.1, 2.3 and 4.2)
  3. Apply application software (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and the Internet to solve business related problems. (Core Goal 2.2, 4.2, 4.3)
  4. Demonstrate the functions and application of file management, electronic mail, and virus detection software on a network. (Core Goal 4.1 and 4.4)

In order to successfully complete the course, we will us Microsoft Office 2013 (Office 2011 for MAC and Office 2010 for Windows areNOT equivalent), Windows, SimNet (included with textbook bundle) and a web browser such asFirefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome. A 180 day trial version of Office is packaged with the textbook.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS

Assignments must be submitted by the due date to receive credit. I understand that things in life happen - illness, technical issues, you forgot etc. Therefore, I will accept one late homework assignment per semester as a ‘free pass’. Exams and quizzes must be taken during the scheduled class time (no makeups) and the final project must be submitted on time to receive credit. The final grade is a weighted average as shown below.

If you decide early in the semester that this course is not a good match for you, be sure to withdraw immediately! The first week of classes is critical a timeframe for making schedule changes. As you can see from the above, if you drop this course within the first week of classes, you have the opportunity to either add a different class and/or be eligible for a substantial refund.

Withdrawal: The last date to withdraw without an instructor signature is 10/28/2014. After that date, an instructor signature is required to withdraw. I will consider signing withdrawal requests through the College specified date of 11/11/2014. I will only sign withdrawal requests for students who are current, active class participants and have special circumstances. Be sure to contact me in advance of this deadline if you would like to discuss the option of a withdrawal with signature. The withdrawal process must be completed by 11/11/2014.

COLLEGE AND CLASSROOM POLICIES

WEX Withdrawal: After 11/11/2014, an Excused Withdrawal (“WEX”) due to medical, catastrophic or other circumstances beyond the student’s control must be requested through the STEM Division Dean with supporting documentation. A review of documentation for an Excused Withdrawal will occur by the Division Deanand a recommendation will be provided to the Provost’s Office.

Students are not permitted to use classroom computers for activities outside of work for this class. This includes the use of social media and completing work for another class during the classroom period. In addition, texting is not permitted during lecture and cell phones must be silenced. Students who exit the classroom during the lecture, must wait until the lecture is over to return to the class.

Students who are unclear about of an academic procedure they are about to undertake should ask their instructor for guidance beforehand. If you submit work which is not your own or give your work to someone else to submit, you will receive a 0 for the assignment. If the offense occurs more than one time, you will receive an XF for the course and could receive additional sanctions by the College.

Attendance Policy:

Attendance in all classes is assumed. If you miss a course, refer to the Blackboard postings for course requirements. It is your responsibility to determine what work was missed and submit future homework on time. You must be in class to submit homework assignments. Homework submitted via e-mail will not be accepted. If you miss more than 4 classes, your final course grade will be reduced 5 points for lack of course participation.

Time Commitment to Homework

In any college course, students can expect to spend between one to two hours per week for each class hour to complete homework assignments, read material for the following week, and study for quizzes and exams. Since this course meets for four hour per week course, you can expect to spend between four and eight hours per week for "out of classroom" activities.

This support team includes counselors, faculty and staff who assist students dealing with issues such as emotional distress, stress, anxiety, eating disorders, abuse, depression, grief, potential violence and substance abuse. Strategies for Success:

  • Attend all classes including the midterm exam
  • Submit all homework by the due date
  • Plan to spend a lot of time at a computer working on your assignments. It is a fact of life: Assignments are due when computers break down. Plan accordingly! Don't wait until the last minute to get your work done and have a backup plan.
