Chemistry/Physics/Geology/General Science Tutor Application

Thank you for your interest in the position of tutor. We are looking for individuals with solid academic background in course material and who also have a desire to work with our students to help them achieve success in their studies here at PCC.

Qualities that we look for in our tutors:

  • excellent communication skills
  • customer service skills
  • degree or successful completion of course work in the subject you will tutor.
  • professionalism
  • dependability
  • self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • responsibility
  • desire to work with students

What we offer:

  • opportunity to work as a part of an educational team in a professional environment
  • chance for personal and professional growth
  • tuition-free tutor training

Tutors provide tutoring services on a drop-in basis; students will approach you for assistance but we also expect you to walk through the lab occasionally to see if there are students who need your help. Usually you will work one-on-one with students to assist them with concepts, particular homework/lab problems, and so on. At times you may work with a small group of students regarding a common problem. It gets very busy around midterms and finals as you may imagine. Your own patience and understanding can go a long way during these particular stressful times.

We believe that tutoring is a complex skill and that support and training and communication are important elements to help our tutors become even more effective. Meetings and training sessions will be held during the term that you will be expected to attend. Usually they will be held on Fridays and you will be paid for your time. We will let you know the schedule in advance so that you may be able to arrange your personal schedule in order to attend.

Good luck on your application! Our tutors are an important part of our program here on the Sylvania campus, and we look forward to working with you, should you be selected.
