CARE OF THE CHILD AFTER
CIRCUMCISION / PENOPLASTY / CHORDEE REPAIR
Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin. A Penoplasty or chordee repair is a more extensive surgery of the penis.
Surgical procedure lasts approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Your son will go to the Post- Anesthesia Care Unit (recovery room) where you will be able to see him. He will stay in the PACU for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Dressing: Your son will have a plastic adhesive dressing around his penis. He will be able to pee normally. The dressing should be removed five (5) days after the surgery. You will be instructed in how to remove the dressing.
If the dressing should come off before five days, it will not be replaced. Start the saltwater baths and antibiotic ointment as instructed below.
Appearance: It is normal to have some bleeding after penile surgery. The tip of the penis will be bright red. The intensity of color will resolve and be back to normal within 1-2 weeks. There will also be bruising and mild swelling. After the dressing has been removed, you will notice some fine stitches around the penis. These stitches will dissolve in approximately 10 days. Once the dressing is off, apply Bacitracin or Neosporin antibiotic ointment WITHOUT PAIN RELIEVER to the penis to prevent sticking to the diaper/underwear. This should be applied three to four times a day or with each diaper change for 1 week after the dressing comes off.
Bathing: Your son can begin tub bathing once the dressing is off. Dissolve l TBS. of salt in the bath water to help resolve the swelling and keep the incision clean. This salt bath should be done twice a day for one week.
Pain: He may have some discomfort for several hours after the circumcision. Use Tylenol, amount as instructed on the bottle, for pain. This amount should be given every 4 hours for the first 24 hours after surgery and then every 4 hours as needed. A prescription for a stronger pain reliever will be given to you depending on the age of the child and extent of surgery. Please avoid any Ibuprofen products 5 days before and 5 days after surgery.
