Circomedia Job Description

Circomedia has a long established reputation at the forefront of development of contemporary circus and physical performance, producing not only well rounded performers but artists who use circus practice and other physical disciplines as their principle media.

This post provides the opportunity to join the company at a key stage of development and to work closely with the Artistic Director, Bim Mason, in consolidating and advancing theoretical aspects of a very practice based course. The post also involves opportunities to work with student projects in creating work and to explore new ideas and directions within this groundbreaking area.

Title: Head of Critical Studies

Responsible to: Artistic Director

Responsible for: Student Support and Course Development Manager, FdA and BA teaching staff

Grade: Senior Project Manager (c.28k @ .8 pro rata)

Main Function:

·  To develop and deliver theoretical aspect of FdA and BA courses

·  To develop and deliver the Circomedia BA program

Main Duties:

·  To lead on accreditation development of the Circomedia BA program and to ensure appropriate links to all aspects of Circomedia professional development courses as appropriate

·  To deliver theoretical and practical classes up to BA level in most of the following subject areas – Site-specific, Burlesque, Stand-up, Grotesque/carnivalesque, Live Arts, Street Arts, Clown and Masks

·  To lead on delivering analytical/theoretical skills and knowledge appropriate to the contextualisation of creative practice in all aspects of the FdA and BA programs

·  To lead on delivery of BA program including timetabling within a context of complex tutor, room and resource demands

·  To deliver FdA and BA lectures, seminars and practical classes as appropriate

·  To set FdA and BA written and related assignment briefs (including essays, case studies, field work etc) and assess the full range of student work

·  To work with the Artistic Director in developing student creative pieces

·  To be Assistant Director in the direction/production of end of year shows as appropriate

·  To contribute to the development of the Circomedia creative teaching team

·  To develop and enhance the Circomedia library and related resources (including online materials) such as reference and research

·  To source appropriate visiting teachers and to schedule their classes/workshops

·  To assess the academically related potential of prospective students at audition

·  To ensure all Circomedia Health and Safety policies and procedures are adhered to

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL

·  Qualified to BA level in contemporary performing arts and theatre, or closely related fields

·  Have a wide knowledge of European Contemporary performing arts and popular performance, including specific practice-based knowledge of both contemporary circus or physical theatre

·  Experience of delivering practical classes in an academic setting in some of the following subject areas – Site-specific, Burlesque, Stand-up, Grotesque/carnivalesque, Live Art, Street Arts, Clown and Masks

·  Experience of co-operative practice at professional level, within fields of physical theatre, contemporary circus or live arts

·  Ability to communicate well with students from emergent academic backgrounds

·  Ability to work flexibly, including some evenings and weekends

·  Experienced project manager, with good organisational skills

DESIRABLE

·  Qualified to MA/PhD level in the field of contemporary performing arts

·  Management experience at BA/FDA level within an academic setting
