SEASON SUMMARY

November Dual Meet Record; 5-2

The Cougars open the dual meet season by winning 5 of the first 7 duals. The only nail biter is yet another close match up with Bryan. The 2 losses are to much better teams and could not have been won even with all the varsity in the lineup. To help secure the team victories, big matches are won by Andrew Ramirez (28-12) and Caine Menn (10-7) during the Cy Ranch meet, and by Austin Jones and Nick Loupe (both falls) to help secure the Bryan win.

December Dual Meet Record; 6-1 (overall; 11-3)

Houston Area Dual Meet Runner-Ups

December was a very good month of duals for the Cougars. The only month of the year with basically the “A” line up intact, Cinco defeats 2 of their longest rivals, and places a very respectable 2nd in the regional Dual Meet Championships.

First up was a solid 18 point victory over long-time rival Westside. Out of over 90 different schools that CRHS has dueled in 13 seasons, there are only 10 that hold winning records over the Cougars (and 7 of those are 0-1 records). Westside was one of them, with the Cougars having now won 4 of the last 6 pairings, the all-time record now stands at 8-8 with the “other best” South Texas team. Big wins are scored in this meet by Trevor Parisi (5-2), Marcello Cooper (10-7) and Tanner Waltman who “shuts the door” with a fall.

Next up is the Regional Dual Meet Championships, and the Cougars will win four in a row to attain the finals. After 3 easy wins, the Cougars come out flat in the semi’s, but hang on to beat district rival Strake, attaining the finals. Big matches are won in the 21 point victory over District-Rival Morton by falls by Nick, Trevor, Jessie Hardin, and Adrian Jimenez. During the 9-point win over another district rival-Strake, an important early victory is won by Tanner (6-4), bumping up a

SEASON SUMMARY

weight to secure the win. Other big wins are secured by Niles, Jesse and Austin (all falls), as well as a hard fought 4-3 win by Spenser. The “door closers” are Andrew (7-1) and Michael Leyba (11-4) The loss in the finals does not diminish a fine 2nd place finish, securing the position as the 2nd best dual meet team in the area.

The month’s duals end up with another victory over longtime rival Taylor. This 18 point victory marks the 10th time out of the last 12 meetings that CRHS has reigned supreme over their original arch-rival. Big wins to scored Tanner, Jeremy Galli and Niles (all 1st period falls) to set the stage, and John Lanier, Andrew and Michael all end up with falls to help close out the team win. In the best tournament showing of the season to date, both Niles (super finals champion) and Chasity win the big Bryan Invitational. In Allen, easily the toughest meet of the year short of state, both Niles and Cody come through with a place.

January Dual Meet Record; 9-3 (overall; 20-6)

The month started out great dual meet wise. The highlight was at Bryan, in the midst of winning all 5 duals that day, the team honored Coach Dushane with a mini-celebration commemorating his 400 dual meet win. It was much appreciated. The recognition and plaque presented later in the month at the senior parent’s night was icing on the cake! Unfortunately 3 late season losses will be absorbed, owing in large part to anywhere from 3-7 starters being out of the lineup for various reasons. Still, a very fine overall record of 20-6 will be accrued; the 3rd consecutive year Cinco has surpassed the 20 win plateau. This is no small feat when considering we have one of the more challenging dual-meet schedules of any in the area.

SEASON SUMMARY

Districts

The task at the start of the season was simple, yet daunting; how to break in 8-9 first year varsity wrestlers and yet still wrestle in the tradition that is Cinco Ranch. With a very respectable 20-6 dual meet record, many high tournament team places, and a runner-up place at the district championships, I would say mission accomplished. Would we have won more duals (including a win over that orange school) if we had the “A” line up all year? Probably. But the 2nd place finish at the district meet was also probably the highest that could be attained, and therefore, unlike last season, this runner-up finish, although not ideal, was certainly acceptable. With the girls finishing a very solid 3rd, and the JV (almost entirely rookies) also with a runner-up spot, all three teams placed as high as they could, and therefore it could be said the entire program finished on a high note!

Reigning as District Champions are Junior Austin Jones; Austin surprised all outside of Cinco with his comeback; Senior Captain Cody Newnom-with his 5-4 win in the finals, becomes only the third-ever 3-time District Champion for Cinco (there have been three 4-time champions by Cinco). On the girl’s side, both 1st-years wrestlers Ashley De Leon and Chasity Villarreal dominate their weight class, scoring all their victories by falls. Captain Tanner Waltman ends up 2nd with a heart breaking 1-0 loss in the finals. Sophomore Niles Peebles, and Senior Jesse Hardin also end up second, securing their place at the regional meet. Sophomore Andrew Ramirez saved his best for last, finally beating his orange-school opponent for the 1st time (and only one that really counts) to steal a ‘seat on the bus” and capture 2nd on a wrestle-back. Captain Emily Greenstein loses a hard-fought 4-2 semi-final match to end what has not only been a great season, but a very solid career.

SEASON SUMMARY

Regionals

Overall, the Regional Championships went very well. After starting on a bad note when district champion Austin has to withdraw due to illness, four Cinco wrestlers will make it through to state in by far the toughest region in the state. Both Cody and Ashley had outstanding 2nd place finishes. Chasity and Niles both make it to the consolation round finals, securing their spot on the bus to state, with Chasity ending up 3rd. The huge disappointment was the two tough losses (1 in overtime) that Tanner suffered, bringing his career to a premature end. But Tanner has nothing to hang his head about. As he, the coaching staff and the entire team know, as he did his entire career, Tanner gave maximum effort at all times and can be proud of his accomplishments.

State

The State Meet, as it should be, is the toughest meet of the year. It actually starts in early February when a wrestler has to place in the top 2 of not only a 12 man bracket, but in a very competitive district. This being accomplished, the wrestler then has to place top-4 in what is undoubtedly the toughest region in the state year in and year out. To illustrate this point, there have been 13 teams crowned UIL State Champions, and 10 have come from Region III! Six boys and two girls made it out of the District ‘phase’ of state. Two boys and two girls then made it through the Region phase. And for the 9th time in the last 10 years, Cinco has had at least 1 wrestler attain the coveted podium at the final phase-State. Congratulations to sophomore Ashley De Leon for continuing this long Cinco tradition!
