REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR

Just about every morning and evening Macy and I walk out to Highway 41 and back. If you happen to be cruising around out there around 6am, you might see us. If we time it right in the morning, we see the sun come up behind the wind towers. In the foreground is a small pond in the stubble of a cornfield. Of course, there are ducks in that pond. The meadowlarks are usually singing away. The beauty of the moment is incredible.

And now, now my friends, there are changes taking place. On the west side of the road is a wheat field. Not too long ago it was snow covered. But the other week we got to watch the field being planted. And now, just now, the wheat is coming through the dark soil. These past days, every time I see this field, I am reminded of the great Easter hymn that we sing on the first Sunday in May as we bless the seeds, soil, and water.

Perhaps you can sing with me? “Now the green blade rises, from the buried grain, wheat that in dark earth many days has lain; love lives again, that with the dead has been; love is come again like wheat a arising green.”

“Forth he came at Easter like the risen grain, he that for three days in the grave had lain; raised from the dead, my living Lord is seen; love is come again like wheat a rising green.”

“When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain, your touch can call us back to life again; fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been; love is come again like wheat arising green.”

Join me in a walk, if you’d like. Notice the wheat fields. As the Easter season draws to a close and we move into the season of Pentecost we can sing together: Love is come again, like wheat arising green.

CHURCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

May 14, 2014

Ø  1. Learned that April worship attendance and offerings were up significantly over April 2013.

Ø  2. Continued a discussion of our pledge for the Camp of the Cross Capital Campaign. MSC to pledge $20,000 and count the Half of Christmas offering ($7425) towards that pledge which leaves $12,575 to raise. There are many options to help us get to the goal (a portion of the CANDISC proceeds, a portion of Harvest Festival, the 2014 Half of Christmas offering, etc). Conversation was also held regarding the start up of the Sunne Capital Campaign to pay of the loan. Consensus was that the Sunne campaign will begin in the late spring of 2015.

Ø  3. Appointed June Neumiller as our BEK voting member.

Ø  4. Established the deacon and teller list for June.

Ø  5. MSC to seal the cracks in the parking lot and have the stripes painted.

Ø  6. Noted that Cotton Wood will perform during worship on Harvest Festival Sunday (Sept 28).

Ø  7. Noted that work will begin soon on the main parsonage bathroom to replace the leaking tub.

Ø  8. Noted that the Food Pantry distributed 9,000 pounds of food in the first quarter of 2014.

WORSHIP THE SON on the sunniest day of the year at Sunne, one of two Sunnes

in the world.

MIDSUMMER PICNIC

Sunne Lutheran Church had its beginning with the Swedish settlers in this area. The summer holiday that the Swedes celebrated was the summer solstice, Midsummer, on the 24th of June. No matter what day of the week it fell on, the church had a holiday. They had a potluck dinner, a worship service, the youth made and sold ice cream, the ladies of the church had an auction of things they had made. It was truly a community affair. The celebration was usually held in a farm yard or picnic area.

This year, the Midsummer Picnic will be Sunday the 22nd at Sunne. The Sunne WELCA sponsors the Midsummer picnic. Everyone is welcome to come at 10 a.m. for the worship service and bring something for potluck dinner.

REDWOOD VILLAGE

Sunne will be providing worship at Redwood Village on Wednesday, June 11, at 2pm. Everyone is invited to come and take part in this brief worship service.

Our sympathies are extended to the family and friends of Idamae Wagner. We thank God for sharing Idamae with us. God bless our memories and comfort us in our mourning.

BAPTISMS

Kate Vivian Kassian daughter of Steve and Melissa, and sister of Kade and Kase Kassian, was welcomed into God’s family through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on May 4th. May Kate know God’s presence all of her life.

Lutheran World Relief School Kit Special Offering

The Vacation Bible School Students have been raising money to purchase supplies for LWR School Kits. If we raise $1200 by the end of worship on

June 1st, Pastor Paul will get a pie in the face following worship. Please note, if we raise $1200 we will order the supplies that are needed, which would take the place of the school kit drive we usually have in the fall.
