Preacher’s Pen
“Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:”,
(II Peter 1:1)
Why Do We Need A Saviour?
Perhaps some will recall our study together last week (“Hell”) and consider that to be the answer to the question posed by today’s title lesson. And certainly, you are right.
Anyone who believes that Hell is real could not possibly want to spend even one moment there. But, can there be more to the answer?
To want not to be condemned to Hell is a good ambition. But, can such fear sustain one until he/she would die? I submit, most likely not. Fear of pain and suffering can motivate many people to do and to not do many things. But, is fear all there is to being a New Testament Christian? Is fear, the best of motivators?
The apostle Peter was inspired in the verse above to describe his faith as “precious”. I will think then, of anything that people will cherish as precious / valuable in order to try to comprehend the point. If you possess a tangible item that you call precious, aren’t you willing to do just about anything in order to keep it? Of course.
So then, should be our faith. We should cherish the promise and hope of eternal life with God in Christ above everything else. THIS type attitude should never remove our fear of condemnation if we should fall from His grace, but this “treasuring” attitude can become our motivation for obedience. And before too long, righteous living can become the norm rather than the exception.
So, why do we need a Savior? Because without Him, though we might live righteously henceforth, we have sinned in the past; without the Savior, forgiveness cannot happen.
