Choosing a Wheelchair from the contracted range

What is a contracted panel wheelchair?

Since 2009, Domiciliary Equipment Service (DES) has had a contractedpanel of manual and powered wheelchairs and scooters. A tender processis undertaken and results in a panel of contracted items. This isto improve efficiencies in supplying, repairing and modifying the large numbers of wheelchairsand scooters that DES purchases on behalf of clients every year. The process ensures access to quality products that suit a wide range of people and offer value for money.

How are the items selected?

A comprehensive process is used to select which wheelchairs and scooters are included in the contractedrange. The tender process is repeated every three years to ensure products available are current.

Products undergo a hands-on evaluation by wheelchair users, clinicians and technicians. Wheelchairsand scooters are evaluated for ease of use, adjustability, how easily they can be customised, availability of spare parts, durability and overall appeal and aesthetics. All wheelchairs and scooters must comply with Australian Standards and must provide value for money.

Suppliers are reviewed to ensure they are reliable, able to provide products quickly and provide follow-up support.

What are the advantages for me?

  • Every wheelchair and scooter in the contracted panel range complies with Australian Standards, meaning it has been independently tested for quality and safety.
  • Suppliers are obligated to provide the wheelchair or scooter to DES within an agreed time frame, which reduces the waiting time once your item has been ordered.
  • Suppliers and DES are able to maintain a supply of spare parts, allowing repairs to occur in a timely manner.
  • All wheelchairs and scooters have a local Adelaide supplier, supporting local businesses and jobs, and improving access to local support and follow up.
  • Items have been assessed for value for money.
  • Clinicians and techniciansbecome familiar with the item specifications. This means they can advise on which ones may best suit your needs and are familiar with how they can be modified in a timely manner.

What if the items don’t suit me?

Items are evaluated and carefully selected in order to meet the needs of most people. There are occasions where a specific need may not be able to be met by an item in the contracted range. If this happens, we can source either an item from a different category of wheelchair or, an item that is not on the contracted panel.
