CHMS PTO General Meeting Minutes

October 15, 2014

1.Welcome & Call to Order

●The meeting was called to order at 9:00 am.

●Minutes from the September 10, 2014 meeting were approved.

●All minutes are posted on the PTO website.

2.President’s Report - Susan Charlier

●D181/BOE Report

○CHMS qualified for Title 1 program funding. Money will be used for activities within the school.

○Senate Bill 16 - Bill revises how state funding is provided to school districts. D181 will lose $1.6m in annual funding from the State if the bill passes. There is more information available on the D181 website.

●Directory Update

○Melinda Haggard did an excellent job putting the directory together.

○The PTO raised $3500 in advertising.

○Two pages in the directory did not get printed, due to an error by the printing company. As a result, some families were omitted. The printer will reprint these pages, and families will be able to add them to their directory. Kids will bring home the reprinted pages.

●Gym Floor Dedication & Plaque

○The gym floor looks awesome.

○PTO is currently working on creating a donation plaque. A dedication ceremony will follow after the plaque is completed.

●December PTO meeting: “Beyond Google”

○PTO is adding an additional meeting on Wednesday, December 10th at 9 am. The meeting will be a presentation only (no general meeting).

○Sally Duffy, MRC Director, will talk about the features of Google Docs.

●“Mrs. Duffy’s Picks: Books & Beyond”

○To give students some reading ideas, Sally Duffy will be posting 5 new book titles every month on the PTO website,

3.Treasurer’s Report - Marnie Joy

●Review Expenses/Income

○Fundraising is off to a great start.

○Almost $3,000 was raised from the first Chipotle Night.

○Magazine sales are over $21,000.

●Vote on 7 iPads for Math Teachers

○7 Math teachers asking for the PTO to help purchase iPads for them to assist with teaching Math in class. For example, the teacher can walk around the classroom with the iPads and work problems that project on the class boards. The iPads also work with the Apple TVs that have been installed in each classroom.

○The total cost is $4,683.

○The Board motioned to pay for $3,500 of the cost. The remainder will be paid for with CHMS building funds. This motion was approved and passed.

●Manna

○Next Wednesday, October 22nd is the end of first Manna campaign period.

○Gift cards will be handed out on Thursday, Oct 30th from 2:30 - 3:30 in the lobby.

○There will be additional campaign periods starting in November and January.

●Holiday Shopping

○3% of one’s purchases from Amazon can go to support the CHMS PTO.

○Before shopping on Amazon, access the CHMS PTO website and click on the “Fundinco.org” tab.

○This link works all year.

4.FUNdraising & Activities

●Eagle Cafe

○The first lunch is Friday, October 17th.

○Home Run Inn Pizza will be served.

○List of those students who purchased lunch will be posted cafeteria on Thursday, October 16th.

●Welcome Committee

○A coffee for families new to the area will be held this Friday, October 17th from 9 am - 12 pm.

○The coffee will be held at Mary Healy-Jonas’ house, 56 Chestnut in Clarendon Hills.

●SELAS

○Make a Difference Day is October 25th. In recognition of this day, students will be writing an act of kindness that they will complete over the weekend on paper hearts in advisory classes next week and will hang them on a tree in the cafeteria. Kari Meyer is preparing 628 paper hearts for the students.

●Magazine Sale Recap

○PTO is projected to have raised $25,000 this year from magazine sales.

○Students, who earned the movie outing, will go see the movie in the afternoon of Wednesday, October 22nd.

○As a thank you for their help with magazine sales, the PE Teachers have put together a proposal to purchase 40 Polar Heart monitors to use in PE class. The Board is working with the PE Teachers to put together a final estimate for the cost. This purchase will be voted on at the General PTO Meeting in November.

●Clubs & Activities Fair Recap

○The fair had an excellent turnout. 450 bags of popcorn were distributed.

○All clubs and activities are on a “drop in” basis.

○All clubs and activities are listed on the CHMS website and in the directory.

●Spirit Club

○The club will be holding mascot tryouts for the students. There will be no cuts, and any student can participate.

○Student will need a sports physical to participate.

○Tryout date is still to be determined.

●Box Tops

○CHMS will be collecting Box Tops until November 1st. They can be dropped off in the office.

●Chipotle Night

○The next fundraising night will be Wednesday, November 5th from 4-8 pm.

○Online and phone orders will not count toward fundraiser.

○50% of sales will support the CHMS PTO.

6.Principal’s Report - Assistant Principal Joni Sherman

●School Improvement Plan Goals for Reading and Math

○Raise the expectation of MAP scores to be 75% of students meeting or exceeding goals. Last Spring, the school achieved 81%.

○Have more students in the top quartile for MAP. Currently, 55% of the students are in the top quartile for Reading and 51% are in for Math. The school would like to keep at this point and continue to raise the percentages.

○Have teachers focus on skills within a student’s MAP range.

○Have students obtain a better depth of knowledge on a subject and create lesson plans to improve this.

○Increase academic vocabulary for students.

●School Improvement Plan Goals for SELAS

○Increase the percent of students who believe they have a choice. At the last student assessment, the student’s did not feel like they had a choice.

○Increase students’ ability to make a contribution to society.

○Decrease percent of students who feel sad or hopeless.

○Increase students’ ability to provide service to others. This is being implemented by teaching students in advisory and the classrooms to be actively kind to one another. For example, the students are writing inspirational messages on mirrors in the bathrooms.

○Teachers are reaching out to students who are not connected with activities in advisory. They are also implementing a “1-5-9 plan”. Each teacher connects with one student 5 times a week for nine weeks.

●Safety Week - School will be performing various safety drills throughout the week.

●Social Workers will begin summarizing SELAS activities. Each month will they will provide an overview in the PTO e-news.

7.Speaker: Dr. David Bedney, Robert Crown “What Students Will Learn in Sex Education Class”

●Dr. Bedney provided an overview of the Sex Education presentation that is provided to the students in each grade.
