Ted Granger (United Way of Florida - President) - Significant increase in student population which will affect the budget during 2011 session. 70-80% of the budget comprises education and human services. Cuts will be coming to those areas in 2011. State is facing about a $3 Billion shortfall, revenue estimating conference is meeting today, and will put out more precise figures. There has been discussion about a tax payer bill of rights (TABOR), which would prohibit increasing annual state revenues by more than population growth + inflation + 1%, or about 3%-4% in the foreseeable future. The average in past years, before the recession, was about 6%-8%. Background screening has caused a tremendous amount of problems, UWOF is working with DCF and other providers to address some of these issues.

Ted is following up with a letter to the new Governor, inviting him to all of our events, but especially to speak at the dinner. Comments were that this would be a good place for advocates to meet with him and get to know who we are and get on his radar. Ted said legislative session schedules are tight, and he encouraged participants to e-mail the Governor through his website, and provide him with suggestions and introduce themselves.

The schedule of events is up on the website. Local events are being planned and are getting posted, they will take place in February, March and April.
