Children’s and Youth Minister

£18,000 per annum

This is a fixed term post for 1 year with the possibility of extension and/or permanency.

Background:

St Anselm’s Church, Kennington, is a diverse and community-oriented church in London’s inner city. St Anselm’s takes children’s faith and spirituality seriously and we have a large and growing number of children and young people in the congregation. We’re seeking to recruit a full-time Children’s and Youth Minister to serve our local children and young people, to disciple them, and to lead the church forward creatively in its provision for them.

The Role:

This is a role for someone with a passion for working with children and young people. It’s a role that would suit someone wanting to spend a year or more exploring their vocation in Christian ministry or youth work. It’s a role for someone wanting to put their faith into practice in service to children and young people of all backgrounds.

The children’s and youth ministry at St Anselm’s is large and varied; we have up to 80 children on a Sunday, and have a growing and dynamic ministry within the community. Every week at Sunday worship a large team of volunteers runsan active crèche, a multi-grouped Sunday school, and ayouth discussion group. Along with this we run a small mid-week youth club, a booming babies and toddlers morning group, a new and growing junior choir run by the Assistant Director of Music, we help run a girls and boys brigade, and we lead activities and clubs at our OFSTED rated ‘outstanding’ Parish school. Your role would be to take the lead in coordinating all of these weekly activities and creatively growing and changing them. Along with current regular activities, you would be expected to lead on any new initiatives, and the role leaves you freedom for innovation, creativity, and experimenting.You will be supported in the role by a Parish Team Rector and an active and engaged group of parents and church officers.

Specifically:

  • To organise and lead the children and youth activities on a Sunday morning – crèche, Sunday School, and youth discussion group
  • To lead, coordinate, and encourage the team of volunteers who run these groups
  • To deliver a 2-5 minute children’s talk in the morning service on most Sundays
  • To oversee Thursday morning Church Mice group for babies, toddlers, parents and carers.
  • To work with the St Anselm's Assistant Director of Music to develop the new junior choir.
  • To lead and grow a midweek youth club for teenagers
  • To work with the uniformed organisations (Boys’ Brigade, and Girls’ Association)
  • To oversee the youth provision at key major Parish events (Kennington Fete at Lambeth Palace, Kennington Country Life, Harvest Festival, Christmas Crib Service, Easter services)
  • To actively encourage the participation of young people from across the parish in trips and other activities as appropriate
  • To be a key player in the wider ministry of St Anselm’s and North Lambeth Parish – attending services, praying with the wider team, being involved in one off events, attending meetings
  • To oversee and ensure all safeguarding and health and safety requirements are implemented and comply with the North Lambeth Parish safeguarding policy
  • To ensure all youth activities are consistent with Diocesan youth policy and registrations are up to date

  • Team Rector and Church Wardens.

Personal Specifications:

Qualification/skills:

  • 5 GCSEs grade A-C

Essential:

  • An active Christian faith and spiritual life
  • Experience (professional or voluntary) of working with children and young people
  • Outstanding communication skills, and confidence in public speaking
  • Ability to engage and inspire children and young people
  • Excellent team working and leadership skills, including an ability to lead and motivate volunteers
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • A clear understanding of implementing best practice in safeguarding and health and safety for young people
  • Computer literate, including excel, word and email

Terms and Conditions:

  • Salary of £18,000 per annum plus allowances
  • 1 year full time fixed term contract with the possibility of extension or permanency
  • 6 month probationary period
  • 10% contribution to a pension fund of your choice
  • 25 days holiday a year in addition to bank holidays
  • Hours 35 a week. There will be an expectation that some unsociable hours will be required as well as attendance at services on Sunday. Time off in lieu of unsociable hours worked will be offered.
