Children Living in Garbage
There are about 1.8 billion children in the world and 130 million of them can’t go to school. They live in Brazil, India, the Philippines and other countries. Why can’t they go to school? It’s mostly because they are poor.
In Payatas, the Philippines, there are people living in garbage. These people are called “scavengers.” They build small houses on a garbage mountain named “Smokey Valley.” Every day, garbage is brought to Smokey Valley from nearby cities. The scavengers collect things like glass and cans in the garbage and sell them to recycling companies.
There are many children living in Smokey Valley. They work for three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon to help their families. But they only get about 500 yen a day. Because they can’t count money, they are sometimes cheated by the recycling companies.
They can’t go to school, but they still have dreams. First, they want to be able to eat every day. Second, they want to get medicine. Third, they want to go to school, graduate, and get a job. They know that school is very important.
What do you think about their lives and dreams? A lot of Japanese people have heard about the situation and some of them have taken action. For example, a Japanese journalist built a school in Payatas. In addition, several schools in Japan began to support children in Payatas by sending pens, notebooks, toothbrushes, money for medicine, and so on. A school in Hiroshima is one of those schools. Every year, the students collect things and one of the students takes the things they collected to Payatas with a volunteer group. That student comes back and talks about the children in Payatas to the others, so all of them can learn more about the situation there.
