The program is hoping to partner with MenifeeUnionSchool District to provide more placement options. Most of the enrolled students have more than twenty semester units of Child Development and Education while some have as few as six units.

Group Discussion

Kathy Turner began the discussion by distributing copies of several flyers regarding the Curriculum Alignment Project that is an effort to ease the transition from CA community colleges to the California State Universities by ensuring that all early childhood courses are the same regardless of where the students takes the course. At this time, the project is asking for suggestions on which courses to include in the alignment program and Ms. Turner asked for suggestions.

Donna Roberts suggested that Infant/Toddler courses be included since that is the fastest growing area of child care and there is a shortage of qualified individuals to work these positions.

Cherie Ward stated that Infant/Toddler courses are critical for mental health professionals and that First 5 is re-training anyone who works with children ages 0-5 years.

Marcia Bonafede stated that she thought the Health, Safety and Nutrition courses are essential to provide quality child care programs.

Mark McGregor thought that Language and Literacy courses should be included since 75% of students with an IEP can’t read at grade level.

Donna Greene suggested a Bilingual Education course.

Cherie Ward wondered about the possibility of a course focusing on research methods and statistical analysis. Kathy Turner stated that that type of class would probably fall under general education. Lorraine Slattery Farell mentioned that the MSJC course MATH 140 is equivalent to the CSUSB MATH 210 course (statistics). Kathy Turner mentioned that she was considering putting together a student handout that lists all of the required GE and CDE classes that students should take depending upon their career and/or academic goals.

Cherie Ward also mentioned that CSUSB has a blended Liberal Arts/CDE program called The School Age Child.

Donna Greene suggested Classroom Management Techniques.

Mark McGregor suggested an English Language Learner class.

Kathy Turner asked for additional course suggestions and received the following recommendations:

Mark McGregor suggested a class regarding the legal aspects of teaching, including IDEA, Licensing, Mandated Reporting, and Federal vs State Laws. Donna Greene stated that many of these topics are covered in the MSJC Administration 1 class (CDE 126).

Kathy Turner suggested a class on how to work effectively with parents, staff and colleagues.

Sandi Schwartz mentioned a class on how to be an authentic teacher.

Kathy Turner thanked everyone for their suggestions/comments/participation and the meeting adjourned at 3:03 pm
