Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

Presidents day is February 16th. So this month we will be talking about presidents and their job. Ask studentswould they want to be president give them a few minutes to talk to their neighbors. Then allow them to sharewould you want to be president and why?

Then have students vote would you want to be president or not. Be sure to talk about proper voting procedure. (If you have time have them help you tallie the votes at the end of class)

Then watch do Duck for Presidenton bookflix. This can be found in the family and community title on pages 17-20.

Encyclopedia of the Presidents and their Times / Electronic list of presidents duties.
Copy a different president section for each group. / Demonstrate the proper procedure for reading a nonfiction.

Opening -Prepare the Learner

Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

Remind students we are talking about presidents, for presidents day. We are trying to figure out if we would really like to be president or not.

Select a president from your book and demonstrate how read a non fiction. Start by reading through the sub titles, choose one that seems interesting to you, then read through that section. Do your thought process out loud so that students understand how to read a nonfiction.

Copy a different president section for each group.

They will practice reading through nonfiction and as they read they will highlight different jobs of a president. Give them some time to accomplish this.

Once finished reading, record all the duties of a president. (Be sure to save this electronically or on a large sheet of paper)

Remind students we are talking about presidents, for presidents day. We are trying to figure out if we would really like to be president or not.

Watch A History of the presidency.

Add any new duties of president to the list. Read through the list. Is there anything else we need to add?

Day 4

Opening -Prepare the Learner

Attention: How will I get the students’ attention?

Ask student would you take a job if you had to …(read through the list made in the last few classes)

Then talk about all the jobs of the presidents.

Let students know we are going to revote.

Allow students time to vote then have them come back. Then have students answer Why they voted the way they did.

Read John, Paul, George, and Ben.

Then tallie the votes, discuss why the out come was the way it was.

If you have extra time through out the any lessons I will provide you with exerts from the book How they croaked (warning exerts may be a little graphic, you may want to edit portions) these are a little longer, but tell all about how several presidents passed away.
