4 Highly Recommended (and interesting!) Writing Podcasts

Podcasts are awesome. You can learn something new AND be entertained while working out, doing chores, driving in the car, or taking a bath.

There are millions of podcasts out there, and a fair chunk of them are directed at writers. There’s one problem, though: they tend to be really, really boring. Like, fall asleep boring. I’ve listened to maybe five or six writing podcasts that didn’t make this list simply because they’re so snooze-worthy. In fact, the only one I’ve listened to that I haven’t ended up in a mini-coma is writing excuses.

The rest of these I haven’t listened to, but they come highly recommended. I look forward to checking them out.

Writing Excuses Writing Podcast

This is my favorite writing podcast. They’re only fifteen minutes long, but incredibly informative and entertaining (which is saying something, because all the other writing podcasts I’ve actually listened to are terribly boring.) It’s easy to download an hour’s worth of podcasts to my phone, and listen as I get my sweat on in the gym or go about doing chores.

If you only listen to one writing podcast, make it this one. You won’t be sorry.

Writing University Writing Podcast

I had to include this one, simply because it’s put on by my alma mater, the University of Iowa. I’ll point out that the U of I has the best writing MFA program in the country (It’s also the #2 party school, I must add). Now I didn’t go through the MFA program, but that tells you that they have to know what they’re talking about, right?

I haven’t listened to it yet, but I expect it to be very… literary, if I know my school at all.

Litopia Writing Podcast

Litopia is interesting. They don’t give you tips on craft, as far as I know. Rather, it’s a daily break-down of news that is of interest to writers.

Since I live under a figurative rock, I have high hopes for this podcast.

Grammar Girl’s Writing Podcast: Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing

This podcast professes to give you quick and dirty tips to write better through correct grammar, punctuation, usage, and new developments in the English language.

Sounds great, right? But it’s only available through Itunes. Grrr. What’s and android girl to do?
