HISTORY
The town of Chesterfield was originally settled as a hamlet in 1830. However, just as with so many other towns, with the railroad came through, the area began to grow. In this case, the Grand Trunk Rail was built through the town in 1865.With the building of the railroad, the hamlet began to grow as businesses were built to support serve traffic and passengers.
CULTURE
With plenty of land, and water access, too, Chesterfield has attracted many who long for the life of the suburbs. It has gone from a rural community to a suburban community, full of subdivisions that are served by shopping and other services. But, for those who still long for the country life, the northern part of the township is still rural. This gives its people the option of owning acreage, farming, and having a horse or two. In addition, the location on Anchor Bay in the southeastern part of the area affords residents a chance to enjoy fishing and water sports. There are quite a few marine-based businesses in the area.
While the original hamlet was 100% white in population, there have been a number of minorities that have made their home here, as they strive to escape the busy downtown area of Detroit.
Even though Chesterfield is technically part of the metro Detroit area, it has managed to maintain its feeling of rural life, while providing easy access to “big city” amenities and benefits. With easy access to Detroit and neighboring cities, Chesterfield can offer just about everything a person could want in lifestyle and entertainment.
ECONOMY
Chesterfield no longer depends solely on its agriculture and ranching for income. Now, with the support systems for its residents, the town has a healthy retail climate, as well as support systems for the marine industry. In addition, Chesterfield is the home of Lionel Trains, and the company still maintains its headquarters here. Lionel LLC also has its non-manufacturing offices and functions in Chesterfield.
There are several distinct neighborhoods, or communities in Chesterfield. Some of them center on Anchor Bay, giving residents an opportunity to access the bay easily and comfortably.
CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS
The people of Chesterfield share a strong commitment to helping the less fortunate. There are many charitable organizations in Chesterfield, including The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities. Residents often donate cars for Heritage for the Blind. This helps people both young and old who have sight impairment and some other disabilities. People who have been told they have vision problems can learn about eye disorders, locate rehabilitation facilities, and get support that helps them to remain independent.
