Text:Brown , Lemay, Bursten, Chemistry: The Central Science, 8th Edition, Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ, 2000.

Course Goal: To provide you with an understanding of the equilibria, acid/base theory, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, kinetics and the chemistry of the transition elements .

Topics to be Covered: The topics to be covered in this course will include, but not be restricted to the molecular orbital theory, solution chemistry, chemical equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and kinetics.

Grading: All exams will be given during regularly scheduled class time. There is no excuse for missing an exam and no makeups will be given. Your grade will be calculated on the basis of a percentage of total points. There will be no curve and grades will be assigned based on: 90% - 100% = A, 80% - 89% = B, 70% - 79% = C, 60% - 69% = D, < 60% = F. In the event that you are absent for an exam the percentage score from your final exam will be substituted for the missed exam. The percentage grade from your final exam will replace your lowest exam grade (if higher) if you have no missed exams.

Exams will be 50 minutes each and will each be worth 100 points. The exams will be cumulative and computer-graded multiple choice format.

The final exam will be worth 200 points. A student ID will be required for each exam. Calculators will be needed for the exams and the final. NO GRAPHING CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED! Exam questions will be taken from material covered in lecture, assigned reading, and suggested problems. Exams, including the final exam, will be computer graded. It is the responsibility of the student to have a clean, flat pink NCS Test Form and a number 2 pencil for each exam. Students without the test form will not be allowed to take the exam.

The grading format is:

4 exams at 100 pts. Each

1 final exam at 200 pts.

10 quizzes at 20 pts. Each

Total 800 pts.

The quizzes will be given every Thursday either at the beginning of class or during the final 15 minutes of class. This means you will need a pink scantron sheet every Thursday. This will result in 12 quizzes, of which the best 10 scores will count toward your grade. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUPS FOR THESE QUIZZES UNDER ANY CONDITION!

The instructor reserves the right to modify the schedule, the testing procedure, and the grading basis if, in the professional judgment of the instructor, such modification is in the best interest of fulfilling the course objectives and assuring the academic integrity of the course and the institution.
