Georgia Public Broadcasting Video Lectures

This public station has an entire high school level chemistry course online. This is not an honors-level course like ours but the videos are useful nonetheless if you need the basics. Each video is 30 minutes long and typically has an accompanying note taking guide and a worksheet which you may want to look at. The videos relevant to this chapter are:

Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes Classification of Matter Separation of Mixtures

ChemGuy Video Lectures

Chemguy videos are relatively short (3-5 minute) video lectures on very specific chemistry topics. The topics are divided into categories: junior, senior, AP, and organic. Only one of his videos pertains to this chapter.

Junior Chemistry: The Periodic Table 1- gives an overview of the periodic table (includes demonstrations of the reaction of Li and Na with water and a brief discussion of mixtures, pure substances, compounds, and elements)

Fundamentals of Chemistry Website(U. Wisconsin, Madison)

The link: will bring up the page Fundamentals of Chemistry, by Elizabeth Rogers, Iris Stovall, Loretta Jones, Ruth Chabay, Elizabeth Kean, and Stanley Smith.

The frame on the left hand side of the page contains a list of topics – Introduction, Measurement, Elements, etc. The next to the last topic is the Tutorial Index. Select this link. The left hand frame will now have major topics listed in orange: Introduction, Measurements, Elements, etc. with subtopics listed below.

The five relevant tutorials are under the Introduction topic (Pure substances, Mixtures, Classification Drill, Chemical vs Physical, and Iron and Sulfur Experiment).

As you work your way through some of the problems presented in these tutorials, you may be stuck. If you follow the link labeled “Text”, it will bring up a page of explanatory material designed to help you with the associated problem. If you continue clicking “Next” on the series of pages in a tutorial, sometimes you will be led into a new topic that is related to the original one.

Learning4Mastery

Learning4Mastery, a brainchild of Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams who are both educators from Woodland Park, Colorado, is a website designed for students of all ages to learn.

Bergmann and Sams pioneered the concept of ‘flipping’ the classroom in which the students watch video lessons (used for video podcast, hence, the term ‘vodcast’) made by their teachers and then use class time to do more hands-on activities and work with their teacher on difficult topics. These guys work as a team and the videos contain lectures, lab demonstrations and some kidding around.

General Chemistry 1 and 2 – Professor Chuck Wight – University of Utah

A series of ten-minute (YouTube) videos that present concepts typically covered in the first and second semesters of a college-level General Chemistry Course.

Matter and Measurement We discuss the scientific method of research and the classification of different kinds of matter as elements, compounds and mixtures. The lecture ends with a review of some important chemical and physical properties of matter.

Khan Academy

A dominating presence in the arena of educational video, Salman Khan is the founder and faculty of the Khan Academy ( - a not-for-profit organization with the mission of providing a free world-class education to anyone, anywhere. It now consists of self-paced software and, with over 1 million unique students per month, the most-used educational video repository on the Internet (over 30 million lessons delivered to-date). All 2000+ video tutorials, covering everything from basic addition to advanced calculus, physics, chemistry and biology, have been made by Salman. See his TED Talk – Let’s Use Video to Reinvent Education.Prior to the Khan Academy, Salman was a senior analyst at a hedge fund and had also worked in technology and venture capital. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an M.Eng and B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, and a B.S. in mathematics from MIT.
