Welcome to Second Grade!

I hope you are as excited to start second grade as I am to be your teacher! Although it’s always nice to have some time away from school, I must admit that I’m excited about all of the fun activities and learning that will take place this year. There have been many changes at West Hanover this summer and I can’t wait to share them with all of you!

As an elementary student, I remember always wondering who would be in my classroom. Today’s technology makes it much easier to find that information than when I was a kid, but just in case I’ve enclosed a list of everyone who will be in our class this year. We currently have 21 students in our room. I’m sure you’ll recognize many names on the list as friends from your first grade classroom as well as names of some new friends you’ll get to know better this year!

In addition to the Class List (enclosed in the mailed Welcome letter), I’ve also enclosed a School Supply list and two homework assignments! One is for you and one is for your parents. Don’t worry, they are both easy and you can even ask an adult at home to help you with the writing part of your homework. If you find a question that you aren’t sure of or that doesn’t apply to you on the Student Interest Survey just leave it blank and if you need more room for your answers simply write on the back. Don’t forget to put your name at the top! Mom, dad, and/or a guardian can complete the page marked Parent 3-2-1 and you can return both to school on August 25th. See, I told you it was easy!

If you want to get a sneak peek into the classroom check out our class website after August 19th to see what the inside of our classroom looks like! You can navigate to our classroom site by using the District website, www.cdschools.org or simply go to http://moourl.com/mrsheter
See you on the 25th!

School Supplies

As summer vacation comes to an end, I’m sure you will be excited to go shopping for school supplies. We are very fortunate at West Hanover because our school district has been able to supply us with just about all the supplies we need to be successful learners. In fact, the classroom will be stocked with most of the folders, pencils, markers, and crayons needed for many of the projects we’ll be working on throughout the school year. However, I know how exciting it can be to buy back-to-school supplies and there are a few supplies we cannot provide that will be helpful to you as a second grade student. Please review the list below and don’t hesitate to email me at if you have any questions or concerns.

YOU WILL DEFINITELY NEED:

·  A sturdy full-size book bag for carrying your homework to and from school each and every day.

·  A 1/2 inch binder with clear pocket insert on the front cover. Any color is fine, but it is important that it have the clear pocket insert in the front. We will be using these to make a special scrapbook throughout the year.

·  15 clear pocket page protectors which will also be used for the scrapbook.

·  A pack of glue sticks (3-6). These will be used and shared for a variety of projects throughout the school year.

·  A colorful pocket folder to use as a Home/ School folder. In fact, you may want to pick up 2-3 while they are on sale. Bring one to school and keep the others at home. This way, if your first one starts to rip it can easily be replaced.

·  A set of inexpensive headphones. Two years ago I received a grant from the CAIU that provided 6 student iPads for instructional use within our classroom. The students found that some of the apps can be a bit noisy and disruptive to classmates during quiet work time and suggested we start out the year with headphones. These can be purchased relatively inexpensively at 5 Below. Any small style of headphone will be fine, just check to be sure it has the smaller type of headphone adapter that will fit into an iPad or iPhone. We will keep these in labeled plastic bags and your child will be the only one to use his/her headphones.

WE WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE:

·  Two or three boxes of “Kleenex” – any color or style. We have tissues at school, but they are not very soft for when the weather gets cooler and our noses start to get runny! We’ll share these throughout the school year so if you want to send in one now and one or two a little later, that would be fantastic!

IT’S GREAT TO HAVE:

·  A special work place set up at home so you have everything you need to complete your daily homework without wasting time looking for materials.

·  A small pencil pouch with supplies to keep in the car so you can work on your homework on those busy nights when you are rushing to scouts, dance, or other extracurricular activities.
