Chee Mamuk, Aboriginal Program, housed at the BC Centre for Disease Control, provides culturally appropriate HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and sexually transmitted infection (STI) education to Aboriginal communities in BC.

Around the Kitchen Table (ATKT) training is a fun, interactive 4-day workshop that brings Aboriginal women together to learn about HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and sexual health. ATKT is a train-the-trainer program and our goal is to provide women with the education, skills, resources and supports to be ATKT facilitators. Following the workshop, teams will be able to host and lead a series of sessions in their own communities.

Around the Kitchen Table training is centered on community, food, laughter, and traditional activities. Chee Mamuk believes in relationship building and offers ongoing support for ATKT Facilitators through community visits and follow-up training sessions.

ATKT is made possible with funding support from BC Centre for Disease Control and Provincial Health Services Authority Aboriginal Program.

Training includes:

·  Fun team building exercises

·  Participating in group icebreakers and games

·  Learning about HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections

·  A Harm Reduction approach

·  Developing plans to facilitate ATKT sessions in community

·  Learning to facilitate ATKT discussions

·  Binder that includes lesson plans and materials needed for games and activities

·  Creative cultural activities

·  Involvement in a traditional celebration ceremony

Aboriginal communities and organizations both on and off reserve are welcome to apply. Each selected community receives $2,500 seed funds to support their ATKT sessions. Each community is also expected to make a financial contribution to further support their ATKT sessions (see step 3 for further information). ATKT requires a commitment of approximately 150 hours that is shared between the team of ATKT facilitators
